Kymberly Alvaraz (née Christian) (born July 28, 1967) is a former American evening news anchor for Fox affiliate station KDNC-FTV of Denver, Colorado and currently a moderator of the American version of Vote for the Girls. She is also best known for having had an affair with Ava Zinn. Zinn, in the spring of 2014, had successfully auctioned her virginity for a long term relationship to Alvaraz, that was revealed in Kym's criminal trial and during a segment of Vote for the Girls on February 2015.

Early Life and career

Kymberly Alvaraz was born in Denver. Her father, David Joesph Christian (1935 – 1993), was a florist. Her mother, Julie Christian (née Mengering), a news anchorwoman at KTRJ, KIAA, and KDEN, has been an occasional figure in Denver, usually at holidays and birthdays. Her father is of German descent, and her mother had English, Scots-Irish, and German ancestry. Kym has an older sister, Laverne (b. 1963), an older brother, Juan (b. 1965), a younger sister Davina (formerly Dave Jr.) (b. 1969), and a younger brother, Stephen (formerly Shirley) (b. 1971). Davina and Stephen are both transsexuals with Stephen transitioning from female to male in 1994 and Davina transitioning from male to female in 1996.

She lived on the south side of Denver (Hampden South area), not far from Auroa, Colorado, and the Stapleton International Airport, and she enjoyed collecting model airplanes, including fighter jets. In 2010, he told an interviewer for Colorado Magazine that, while growing up, she admired her mother's ability to tell jokes and be the life of the party. David Christian survived a heart attack at age 36, when Kymberly was a young girl. The fear of losing her father was constantly with Christian as she grew up. The elder Christian died of a second heart attack at age 57.

Kymberly Alvaraz attended her hometown's Thomas Jefferson High School at the same time as Brad Handler (future chairman of Inpiratio, coincidentally Alvaraz is nine days younger than Handler) and worked as a stock girl at the local Safeway Supermarket. According to a longtime friend of Kymberly's, she originally had wanted to attend University of Colorado, but her grades were not good enough, so she instead attended University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley, Colorado. She is a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority, and she graduated in 1989 from the School of Communications. A self-described average student, Christian later endowed a scholarship for what she called "C students" at Northern Colorado.

Kymberly Alvaraz (then going by Kym Christian) began her broadcasting career as an announcer and newscaster at radio station—KFKA. She was fired for treating news stories with irreverence.She then became involved with NBC affiliate KCNW. She credits Stormy Rottman, host of the Dialing for Dollars television show franchise shown in Denver while she was growing up, for inspiring her choice of career:

"I was just out of high school [in 1985], and I really didn't know what I wanted to do. And then all of a sudden I saw him doing it [on TV]. And I thought: That's really what I want to do!"

Career

Anchorwoman

Alvaraz began her television on then Fox affiliate KDEN (now a CW affilaite) as an anchor, and weather woman in 1988. She received some attention for her unpredictable on-air behavior, which included congratulating a thunderstorm for being upgraded to a tornado. She would also occasionally report the weather and the day's very high and low temps for fictitious cities ("Eight inches of snow in Rocky Road City and surrounding areas").

KIAA

On June 23, 1989, Alvaraz was morning anchor for then NBC affiliate KIAA-FTV's 9 News Today in Colorado. It was originally 30 minutes long, but was expanded to 60 minutes in August 1990. The show ran Monday through Friday at 6:30 a.m. Mountain Time, followed by Today. It was during Alvaraz's time KIAA (now a CW affiliate), she also began substituting for Kylie Dwyar on the weekday 5 and 10 p.m. editions of 9 News. Before long, gossip columns and media observers predicted that KIAA would remove Jane Palmer from the station and replace her with Alvaraz in an effort to improve the program's recently declining viewership by young women, the demographic most coveted by morning shows.

Much of the criticism had focused on Kymberly Alvaraz's youth and beauty, with many branding her "the other woman" and a "home wrecker," in a reference to what some felt seemed like her intent on creating the traditional male-female anchor teams. (It is interesting to note that after Alvaraz's departure in 1992 and Dwyar's departure in 2014, NoSirGifts, the current owner of Denver Fox/NBC duopoly KDNC/KZCO and KIAA's rival, began to use the female-transfemale or two-woman anchor format on their newscasts in the late 2000's and phasing out the the traditional male-female anchor teams still in use today.)

Within three years, the anchor team of new hire Bryant Allen and Kymberly Alvaraz, debuted with disastrous results. Ratings for the program began to plummet. Critics felt that the anchor team lacked chemistry and many loyal viewers began turning to rival then-ABC affiliate KLZL (channel 4, now CBS O&O) and then-CBS affiliate KDNC (channel 2, now a Fox affiliate).

By the end of 1992, 9 News Today in Colorado, the longtime dominant program in Colorado, was officially the second-place morning show behind KDNC's Eyewitness News This Morning, and most of the blame was pinned on Alvaraz. Kymberly left KIAA for maternity leave in February 1993. It was announced that Kylie Dwyar would substitute co-host during Alvaraz's absence. Ratings for the program rose immediately following Alvaraz's departure and Dwyar's return. Alvaraz and Dwyar would become colleagues at WTOR in Fort Wayne 22 years later when Dwyar left KIAA.

KDNC

In 1993, Joyce Carson retired, and many KIAA viewers believed that Kymberly Alvaraz (still going by Kym Christian) would co-anchor KIAA's main newscasts John Stardell. When KIAA instead gave the job to Adelle Allen, Alvaraz departed KIAA to to become the main anchorwoman of KDNC's main newscasts. Kym Christian made her debut on KDNC on March 7, 1994. For Alvaraz's arrival, New Avon Communications (then-owner of KDNC) spent $8 million in renovations. In addition to that cost, KDNC also signed Christian to a lucrative three-year, $400,000/year contract, doubling her KIAA salary. The total cost for everything (renovations, negotiation right paid to KIAA, signing Alvaraz) was over $12 million.

But while the expectation was that Alvaraz would retain her unique youth and beauty with the move, her tenure at KDNC was not an exact replica of her old tenure at KIAA. Recognizing the more formal mood of her new anchor role and studio, Alvaraz eschewed her trademark blazer with khaki pants or skirt and white sneakers wardrobe combination in favor of expensive shoes (or stilettos), tailored suits, light-colored socks, and trendy clothing. Additionally, because of intellectual property disagreements, Alvaraz was unable to import many of her KIAA segments verbatim, but she sidestepped this problem by simply renaming them ("Viewer Mail" became the "The New Avon Mailbag"--later "The Fox Mailbag" and "The NoSirGifts Mailbag (after KDNC's three subsequent New Avon Communications from 1994 to 1997, DakMedia from 1997 to 2009, and NoSirGifts from 2009 until 2014), etc.)

The 10 p.m. news on KDNC moved to 9 p.m. when the station switched from CBS to Fox in March 1996. In 1997 and 1998, KDNC's 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts consistently gained higher ratings than KIAA. But in 1999, ratings dipped and KIAA's 5 and 6 p.m. consistently beat KDNC at 5:00 p.m. KDNC was sold to DakMedia (aka Fox Fantasy TV Stations) in 1997 and then to NoSirGifts Venues in 2010. Within six months into NoSirGifts' ownership of KDNC, changes at KDNC were made and expanded newscasts for KZCO (which NoSirGifts acquired from USNCD News Venues) and KDNC. The newscasts on KDNC rebranded from Fox 2 News (KDNC's news branding from 1996 to 2009) to Fox 2 Action News (later Colorado's 2 Action News) while KZCO's were rebranded to Z-24 Action News (now NBC 24 Action News as of June 2015) and the combined news operation of KDNC and KZCO were rebranded as Colorado's Action News. Kymberly Christian (as Kym Christian) co-anchored with Janet Webb for KDNC's 4 and 9 p.m. newscast, creating a two-woman anchor team that NoSirGifts began to encourage their stations to pair two females for their evening newscasts (or at least the early afternoon and late newscasts).

The Action News format in Denver proved to be popular in NoSirGifts-owned stations as KDNC benefited from Fox's ratings increases in primetime as well as an improved news product that took advantage of High Definition technology. By the end of the 2000's, the Christian and Webb team at KDNC had a 32% ratings share at 9:00 p.m., more than all of the other stations at 10:00 p.m. combined, as KTRJ (now an ABC O&O), KIAA, and KLZL (now a CBS O&O) battled to stay out of last place, each pulling in about a 3 share for their newscasts. Alvaraz remembers anchoring for 20 consecutive hours covering the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following morning. Another notable story Alvaraz covered while at KDNC was the death of Angie Zapata on July 17, 2008, of which Alvaraz was widely praised for guiding Colorado LGBT through the tragedy. At one point, Alvaraz broke her composure after receiving phone calls from her younger siblings and her children. "We don't often make recommendations for people's behavior from the Fox 2 anchor desk," she said, "but...if you're a LGBT Colorado parent or family, you've got a kid in some other part of Colorado, call them up." Her coverage of the death of Zapata was not without controversy though. After her competitors on the Big Three stations in Denver (KIAA, KTRJ, and KLZL) criticized Alvaraz for supposedly denigrating President George W. Bush on-air during July 18, 2008, KDNC was flooded with more than 1,000 angry phone calls and e-mails. Alvaraz, however, never made the remarks, and Colorado's Action News made KDNC the fourth strongest Fox affiliate in the West Coast and and among the top 10 Fox affiliates and earned Alvaraz her second local Emmy in nine years.

WTOR/WXXC

Kymberly Alvaraz joined WTOR/WXXC in December 2014 as a anchor/reporter, co-anchoring Action News Eyeopener from 6-10 a.m., WTOR's 11 a.m. and WXXC's 12 p.m. Action News with Kevin Stapleton because of Alvaraz's commitments with Vote for the Girls USA. Kymberly Alvaraz made her debut on WTOR's CBS 41 Action News at 11:00 a.m. on December 15, 2014.

Like her tenure in Denver, Alvaraz retained her unique youth and beauty since her tenure at WTOR were not exact replicas of her old tenures at KIAA and KDNC. Recognizing the mood of her new anchor role and studio, WTOR/WXXC's anchors and reporters of various ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations displays the diversity of the Northeast Indiana community and the fact WTOR is NoSirGifts' flagship station (as Alvaraz's co-anchor Stapleton and Bob Imperial are the only remaining anchormen at that station while WTOR/WXXC anchors Rachael Passalt and Juanita Davidson are transgender women while Alexandra Moffitt, Season Atkins, Lynne Jackson, Colleen Rea, and Sabrina Everman are all female) Alvaraz kept her wardrobe combination from KDNC and added slightly more revealing, trendy clothing (it is interesting to note that the daughter of one of Alvaraz's colleague at WTOR and Vote for the Girls co-host Holly Everman, also adopted her own more revealing, trendy clothing themselves). Also because she moved from one NoSirGifts station to another, Alvaraz kept many of her KDNC segments, such as "The NoSirGifts Mailbag", etc.)

Because of her Vote for the Girls commitments, WTOR/WXXC opened a South Bureau covering Wabash, Huntington, Grant, Blackford, Delaware, Madison, Jay, Henry, Wayne, and Wells counties. The South Bureau serves as a secondary set for WTOR/WXXC and is often seen during WXXC's morning newscast, the midday and afternoon newscasts.

At WTOR, Alvaraz is in familiar company with former KIAA colleague Kylie Dwyar after 22 years. Again due to Alvaraz's commitements with Vote for the Girls, in January 2015 WTOR reassigned Alvaraz to weekend evening anchor and on Friday evenings as well.

Talk show host

Colorado Crossfire

Beginning in 2010, Kym began hosting a daytime talk show on KZCO, beginning with her August selection as host of Colorado Crossfire (similar to WXWI's Your Debate and WTOR's HeadButt with Jack Steele). The show, which was shown across Colorado, has aired on KDNC/KZCO since its January 2011 debut and airs weekday afternoons at 1:00 pm on KZCO. Each show featured notable Coloradoans covering a wide variety of topics and issues in Colorado.

Vote for the Girls moderator

Two years after taping the pilot of Colorado Crossfire, Alvaraz was contacted by former NoSirGifts president and CEO Ava Zinn about replacing the recently-deceased Robyn Hurd at Vote for the Girls. After initially turning down the offer, Christain announced on The Kathy Finklemyre Show (airing on WCOL/WZOH, KDNC's sister station in Columbus, Ohio, and just recently syndicated to NoSirGifts stations) that she had accepted a moderator panel role on Vote for the Girls USA and confirming she would be leaving Denver FTV after 25 years and confirmed the news on June 9, 2014. Kym's final KDNC newscast was on June 20, 2014. At the end of her final newscast she quoted:

Tonight, the three previous owners of Colorado's 2 and I have had a relationships for years and years and years — and we have had this conversation in the past, and we agreed that we would work together on this circumstance and the timing of this circumstance. And I phoned Lynsey Matthewson -- the woman now in charge of channel 2's owner -- just a few weeks ago, and I said, “Lynsey, it’s been great, you’ve been a great colleague, Colorado's 2 and Z-24 has been great, but this is my last day here on Colorado's Action News.” My husband of 20 years is starting a new job in Indianapolis. It has not been an easy decision to make. This has been my professional home for almost 25 years. And I love this news department, and all who work in it, to the depths of my soul. Most importantly, my heart is full of gratitude for those with whom I have had the privilege to work as an anchor and reporter and as a host Colorado Crossfire. I want to reiterate my thanks for the support from channel 2, all of the people who have worked here, all of the people in Colorado, everybody at home watching. Thank you very much for welcoming me into your home night after night. For all of us at Colorado's Action News have a good night.

Her first Vote for the Girls was taped on June 22, 2014, and began airing on July 11, 2014. In a post by Alvaraz, it was revealed that during the Halloween 2014 or April Fools 2015 episode, Christian and her fellow VFTG moderator panellists (Kellie Rock, Julia Passalt, Lanise White, Tracia Ward, Rhonda Rhodes, Ava Zinn, and Holly Everman) will switch places with the their spouses, letting the eight women be in the audience for the episode with Samantha Zinn hosting the episode. At Vote for the Girls, Christian is in familiar company with her former rival from KTRJ, Julia Passalt (then known as Jeffrey Passalt).

Within a year on the moderator panel, Alvaraz gained a major ratings windfall in March 2015. Due to Alvaraz's relocation from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to Indiana along with the popularity of former Indianapolis Colts and current Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning quarterback as well as the Rocky Mountain region's status as a reality-based competition hotbed with fellow Coloradoan Riker Lynch competing (as well as finishing runner-up and the male victory) on the 20th season of Dancing with the Stars and Utah natives (and So You Think You Can Dance alums) Witney Carson and Allison Holker being mainstays in Dancing with the Stars, Vote for the Girls is consistently consistently among the highest-rated site in Colorado during the live shows of DWTS, The Voice, and American Idol. In 2015, for instance, Vote for the Girls supporters via Kymberly Alvraz attracted a 4.9 rating and a 8 share, the fourth-strongest Vote for the Girls moderator in the nation (behind only Alvaraz's girlfriend Ava Zinn in Marion, Indiana, Holly Everman in Muncie, Indiana and Kellie Rock in Erie, Pennsylvania).

Shooting incident and affair with Ava Zinn

Murder of Khayla Chow

On October 21, 2014, Christian fatally shot former Vote for the Girls UK moderator and US guest moderator Khayla Chow and Chow's close friend, Victoria Glassering, after Chow attacked her and fellow Vote for the Girls moderator Kendra Ray. A day earlier, Alvaraz and fellow Vote for the Girls moderator Kendra Ray got into a heated argument over their Dancing with the Stars, which Alvaraz goaded Lanise White a "bitch" after her own pick of Jonathan Bennett and Alison Holker was elimnated and upon seeing that Alvaraz's own Team Pharrel pick of Brittany Butler was not chosen to advance to the Knockouts on the seventh season of The Voice,as Alvaraz walked off the set of Vote for the Girls, Chow fired a warning shot that lead to altercation in which Alvaraz fatally shot Chow, who did possess a .45-caliber handgun and her gun was aimed at Julia Passalt (Chow believed it was Holly Everman, who was not physically present and serving a suspension following her own role with Chow and two DUI arrests) and fired at Alvaraz, striking Alvaraz's calf. A gun battle with the four women then ensued, with Alvaraz suffering two gunshot wounds to her left leg by Chow's gun. Alvaraz then used her husband's .357 Magnum revolver and returned fire shooting Chow and Chow's friend, Victoria Glassering, three times. Afterwards, Chow was killed by a gunshot to the head while sitting in her own car, which was parked on a street around the corner from the set. Alvaraz was subsequently taken into custody, treated for head injuries, then questioned for five hours. The police chief said that Alvaraz was released because there was no evidence to refute Alvaraz's claim of having acted in self-defense, and that under Indiana's Stand Your Ground statute, the police were prohibited by law from making an arrest. The police chief also said that Kymberly Alvaraz had had a right to defend herself with lethal force. Fellow Vote for the Girls moderator Julia Passalt took Alvaraz and Kendra Ray to Marion General Hospital, of which Alvaraz was treated for the gunshot wound to her left lower leg. Passalt stated, "Doctors were surprised that Kym's wound to the lower leg wasn't severe enough because Kym's leg beard had stopped the bleeding from getting as worse as it was. I would believe that Beards for Breast Cancer pretty much saved Kym. Because of the size of the caliber bullets that only hit the left calf, doctors decided to remove the bullets lodged in the calf muscle. Kymberly Alvaraz was treated and released from Marion General Hospital on the morning of October 23, 2014. As news of the case spread, thousands of protestors across in Colorado, Texas, and Indiana called for Alvaraz's arrest and a full investigation. Alvaraz was charged with involuntary manslaughter by a special prosecutor appointed by Governor Mike Pence on October 24, 2014.

Kymberly Alvaraz posted on the site's Facebook page regarding the shooting:

Dan and I are extremely heartbroken to learn about the tragic event that occurred on the night of October 21, 2014 and so very saddened to learn the news about Khayla Chow. My sympathy goes to Charlene and Kristina Chow, of whom I had met on two occasions when the Denver Broncos were playing the Houston Oilers or Houston Texans. I'm sure that to Khayla's family, she was a loving, caring person, but that is not what I saw that night. I saw a racist, narcissistic bigot who did not have any regard for the Vote for the Girls moderators. On behalf of Vote for the Girls USA - Official, our hearts go out to their families.

Alvaraz had a televised interview with NoSirGifts Venues-owned CBS stations WIFX and WTOR about the shooting on November 22. Both Alvaraz, Ray, and Passalt have called the shooting incident as a mad black woman and her accomplice that wanted revenge. According to Kristina Chow, the father of Khayla Chow, she indicated that Khayla Chow had had legal problems in the past since the age of ten (back in 2001), Khayla was placed on probation for theft and vandalism. In November 2003, 12-year old Khayla was removed from Kristina's home and placed in a group home and treatment center in Dallas after Khayla's parents learned from Glassering she had become a stripper and prostitute, a claim Charlene Chow denied.

Marion Police released a report on the shooting on October 28, 2014 and witness statements on October 29, indicating that the shooting occurred on a clear night, and Chow was shot from 30 or 40 yards (40 m)Template:Convert/track/abbr/Template:Convert/track/disp/Template:Convert/track/adj/ away while chasing Glassering after she attempted to rob Kendra Ray. Ava Zinn claimed that none of the moderators had been drinking. However, Kymberly Alvaraz has acknowledged that she had one beer twelve hours prior to the shooting. Although Marion Police documents support the official story by Alvaraz and fellow Vote for the Girls moderators, re-creations of the incident produced by Sheena Jay, a private detective in nearby Muncie and Ava Zinn's niece-in-law indicated that the actual shooting distance was closer than the 30 yards claimed.

The incident hurt Vote for the Girls' popularity as a whole and has been the subject of satire and public ridicule, adding more controversy into an already public relations disaster to the site started by Khayla Chow.

Affair with Ava Zinn

Nearly a month after the incident, it was confirmed that Ava Zinn had successfully auctioned her virginity for a long term relationship to Alvaraz. Alvaraz had reportedly been in a lesbian relationship Ava Zinn when Alvaraz travelled to NoSirGifts' offices in November 2010 (as Zinn was then NoSirGifts President and Chief Executive at the time) and again in May 2014 (after Alvaraz's last KDNC newscast), that was revealed in Kym's criminal trial and during a segment of Vote for the Girls on February 2015 . Zinn's Ebay listing was removed, and Zinn reportedly accepted Kymberly Alvaraz's offer of a three-year long-term-relationship deal with Zinn in 2015.

To avoid legal issues since the virginity auction was considered to be prostitution in Indiana and Zinn had raised issues when Ava Zinn made the virginity auction announcement on her own You Tube channel on April 18, 2014, Zinn suggested the event would have occurred in a Nevada brothel (where prostitution is legal in parts of that state). Kymberly Alvaraz and Ava Zinn reportedly consummated the transaction at Zinn's home in September 2014, with Zinn providing Alvaraz spermicide suppository and Zinn using a male condom. Alvaraz then took a morning-after pill the next day (Labor Day) as the sex, despite being protected, reportedly wanted to take additional measures. Zinn also claims to have been inspired by Natalie Dylan and Elizabeth Raine, and Kymberly Alvaraz confirmed that she found herself attracted to Zinn and enjoyed the experience.

Kym and Dan Alvaraz started dating in 1984, while she was still living with Lasks. She has four daughters, Stephani Lola Christian (born February 10, 1993), Haley Julie Alvaraz (born on December 1, 1995) and Benita Alvaraz (born September 20, 1997) and Denise Julia Alvaraz (born David Joesph Alvaraz January 11, 1999), with him. Denise prior to her own gender transition is named after Christian's father, and her transition began on December 1, 2014 (the same day Rachael Passalt and Megan Rock, respectively the transgender daughter of fellow VFTG moderator Julia Passalt and transgendered wife of Kellie Rock, as well as respectively 10 years after Kymberly's girlfriend began her transition from male to female and 20 years after Kymberly's youngest brother, Stephen, began his transition from female to male.)

Kym and Dan wed in 1994, during a quiet courthouse civil ceremony in Westminster, Colorado, where she purchased a ranch in 1991. Christian announced the marriage during the March 15, 1994 edition of Channel 2 Eyewitness News at 10:00, shortly after arriving the previous week. Christian told the audience she nearly missed the ceremony because her truck became stuck in mud two miles from their house. The family resided in Carmel, Indiana, on a 10-acre estate due to Alvaraz's commitments to Vote for the Girls.

On November 20, 2014 a month after Kymberly fatally shot Khayla Chow, Dan Alvaraz filed for an at-fault divorce in Noblesville, Indiana, citing adultery by Christian and naming Ava Zinn and Kristina Chow as a co-respondents. When questioned by reporters, Christian said, "There are a lot of things I will clear up when the time is right, but I really have to be sensitive because there's a lot of people's feelings involved here," while the Alvarazes released separate statements expressing concern for the well-being of their children during the divorce process. Kym Christian later confirmed that Dan and Kym could not resolve their differences and she had been involved in a lesbian sexual relationship. Upon learning about the affair, Dan Alvaraz committed suicide (via self-inflicted gunshot, ironically a similar gun used Kym used when she fatally shot Khayla Chow) on November 22, 2014, in Christian's Carmel home. He was 55 years old when he died. Zinn confirmed on November 29, 2014 that she and Alvaraz began dating as early as July 2014, while Alvaraz was still married to Dan Alvaraz; she has decided to keep his last name. She splits her time between homes in Westminster, Colorado, Carmel, Indiana, and Marion, Indiana.

As a result, Christian will have four new step children, Zinn's daughters Samantha, Ashli, Tiffani, and Tabitha. The long-term relationship became evident as Alvaraz will occasionally host Vote for the Girls due to extended breaking news coverage or special events that may result in Zinn being unable to host Vote for the Girls USA, UK, and/or Australia. The first such occurrences happened on Vote for the Girls USA after Ava's arrest on March 12, 2015 and also on Vote for the Girls UK on March 21, 2015.

Revelation of affairs

Christian has been romantically linked to various men during her career as an anchorwoman. In a recorded message on November 24, 2014 Christian announced that she had been the victim of a blackmail attempt by someone threatening to reveal that she had had sex with several of her male and transgender female colleagues, and at the same time, she confirmed that she had had such relationships. Subsequently, Mike Wilson, a former anchorman at WMRI and one-time colleague with Kym Christian was and indicted by a Denver grand jury and pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted grand larceny on November 21, 2014.

A central figure in the case and one of the men with whom Christian had had a sexual relationship was Marshall Davidson (died in 2002) while he was in Denver in 1993 covering Pope John Paul II's visit. A notable figure whom Christian had a sexual relationship was former Fort Wayne news presenter and Vote for the Girls founder and webmaster Ava Zinn when Christian traveled to NoSirGifts' offices in November 2010 (Zinn was then NoSirGifts President and Chief Executive at the time) and again in May 2014 (after Christian's last KDNC newscast), that was revealed during a Vote for the Girls episode, confirming that that Zinn had successfully auctioned her virginity for a long term relationship to the 47-year-old former news anchorwoman.

In the days following the initial announcement of the affairs and the arrest, several prominent men questioned whether Christian's affairs with subordinates created an unfair working environment. Ava Zinn said that the site's moderators prohibited sexual relationships between hosts and moderators. According to business news reporter Eve Tahmincioglu, "CBS suppliers are supposed to follow the company's business conduct policies" and the CBS 2008 Business Conduct Statement states that "If a consenting romantic or sexual relationship between a supervisor and a direct or indirect subordinate should develop, CBS requires the supervisor to disclose this information to his or her Company's Human Resources Department...".

On December 2, 2014 after being acquitted of all charges in the shooting and later her affair with Zinn, Alvaraz (in her first appearance since fatally shooting Chow) devoted a segment of Vote for the Girls to a public apology to her children and fellow moderators. In that episode, Alvaraz revealed she had been bisexual for 30 years and that Zinn (who is 16 years Alvaraz's junior) is in fact the first woman she's ever been in a relationship with.

On December 19, 2014 news of the relationship with Alvaraz and Zinn became public in a Twitter post, Kymberly and Ava were expecting a baby. The child will be Alvaraz's fifth, but the eleventh for Zinn (who has five with Amanda Davidson, two with Elisa Everman, and four with Angie Willis--a fifth was later adopted after Willis' 2010 death.) Zinn subsequently confirmed that Alvaraz is pregnant and Zinn, as a woman, is the biological father of Zinn's child, and Alvaraz gave birth to a boy called Kenneth on March 28, 2015. However, Zinn has desired to have more children despite Alvaraz's age and Zinn's ongoing gender transition. With Alvaraz going through menopause after her fifth baby is born, any future children between Zinn and Alvaraz will require a surrogate mother.

Sports involvement

Alvaraz is a devoted fan of the NFL's Denver Broncos, NBA's Denver Nuggets, and NHL's Colorado Avalanche since childhood and the MLB's Colorado Rockies since they began playing in 1993. Alvaraz has shown her support for the Broncos by occasionally wearing a John Elway's jersey.

Since Alvaraz and Zinn began dating in 2014, Alvaraz has also occasionally supported the Colts and Chicago Bears (the former of the two NFL teams coincided with the popularity of quarterback Peyton Manning in both Denver and Indianapolis) and the NBA's Indiana Pacers, though neither have been able to attend or even watch NBA games since most Pacers and Nuggets games have moved to cable. Coincidentally, both the Pacers and Nuggets were two of the four ABA teams that joined the NBA in the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. For the 1976–77 season. Although Indianapolis and Denver both have NFL and NBA teams, Indianapolis does not have an MLB nor a NHL team yet Indianapolis has the WNBA's Indiana Fever.
