Vote for the Girls, also known as Vote for the Girls AU, was an Australian internet web site created by American entrepreneur Ava Zinn based on the American site of the same name. Based on the original US site, and an addition to the Vote for the Girls franchise, web series programs were produced by executive producer Ava Zinn and her company Aeverine Zinn Holdings. Vote for the Girls is a website devoted for voting for only female contestants, based on the original US website.

The site launched on 1 July 2015, and like the American and British counterparts, Vote for the Girls Australia was devoted to voting for the female contestants on the Seven Network television programmes The X Factor and the Nine Network television programme The Voice. The moderation panel consisted of Zinn, whom herself is also the host the US and UK versions, Vote for the Girls USA moderators Karly Ryder, Jr., Lanise White, former Vote for the Girls Thailand moderator Thia Tola, and Rachael Passalt, transgendered daughter of VFTG USA moderator Julia Passalt.

As with the American and British versions of Vote for the Girls (VFTG), fans of the site were encouraged to "only vote for female contestants". According to the American version of site, the purpose is "to support voting for the entertaining contestants who the producers would love to see win on American Idol" in order to make it a "real good show." Smaller campaigns, known as make-up competitions, included Seven's Dancing with the Stars.

As of 2015, the Australian adaptation is only one of two franchises to have undefeated (the other is The Netherlands adaptation, Vote for the Girls of Holland) and along with the Dutch version, is one of only four franchises that has not declared a "loss" -- the others are Rösta för Flickorna (the Sweden version of VFTG) and Vota Femminili (the Italy version of VFTG) as the Italy and Swedish versions used the "Moderator's Save," which is now used on many adaptations of VFTG, in addition to make-up competitions.

On 24 November 2015, Zinn announced that she was ending the programme following her decision to focus on the American version and her other projects as well as her other commitments.

History

In 2008, Ava Zinn began watching American Idol (based on the original UK Pop Idol) and seeing the eliminations of female contestants from the seventh through the latter part of the ninth season, Zinn realized that she decided to do something about keeping female contestants on American Idol and eventually discovered discovered that Vote for the Worst essentially ruined American Idol. VFTG USA's first two seasons of American Idol were massively successful, but while fell short when the winner of American Idol was announced. Zinn wished to launch a new site which she would own the rights to. In 2010, following the elimination of Siobahn Magnus, Vote for the Girls, created by Zinn with no involvement from Vote for the Worst creator Dave Della Terza.

On 2 October 2013, Zinn announced plans to launch an Australian version of Vote for the Girls. Zinn is expected to host the particular version even though the Australian versions of "The X Factor" and "The Voice" air around 6:00 AM Eastern time (8 PM in Australia). This resulted in Zinn becoming the only personality to simultaneously host regular web programs in three countries: United States (since 2010), United Kingdom (since 2013) and Australia (as of 2015).

Zinn has stated that unlike the American and British versions, which are aired live and had resources to make the latter version possible, the Australian version is tape-delayed due to the the aforementioned programmes airing in the early morning hours in the United States, the web site posted the episode results on the YouTube Channel at approximately 5 PM Eastern Fridays (9 AM in Australia Saturdays) on a tape delay rather than airing it live, with the voting information for the next X Factor or The Voice performance show under a special dispensation early to Zinn to air in the early morning hours until a moderator based in Australia was found for the Australian version. This was done because no live feeds to Australia's Seven and Nine Networks are currently available in the United States.

Plans for the Australian version initially came to a halt on 9 February 2014 as Zinn announced an Australian version was a no go. Zinn cited the cancellation of The X Factor USA as the reason for the previously scrapped Australian version. The decision was later reversed when Zinn posted the Australian version will launch in 2015.

Following her arrest on 12 March 2015, while Ava Zinn in negotiation to find a way to keep the original American Vote for the Girls in production during a remodel of the Vote for the Girls set (of which will serve for the Australian version) resulting in Zinn (and the VFTG staff) being displaced, and was not willing to have production interrupted, defending her moderator's contract. Zinn, irate, stressed that under the terms of Zinn's contract--as per Vote for the Girls moderator rules--be promptly present on the performance (and/or results) night to its conclusion and record the site's presentation of the results show(s) night both at the home location of Aeverine Zinn Holdings (where the Australian version of Vote for the Girls will be taped), and cannot be interrupted, delayed, or joined in progress for any reason. Zinn insisted that she wanted to do a temporary transfer of the networks feed, resulting in no interruptions. Upon hearing this, Zinn said “I want this done the way I want to handle this with and ZERO INTERRUPTIONS!”, and during the comment, pounded three times saying, “ZERO INTERRUPTIONS!” and got into the official’s face as the available resolutions Zinn was offered did not meet Zinn’s standards and swearing at the official. Zinn was ejected and was initially given a one-show suspension and a year probation from NoSirGifts. As a result, Zinn agreed to delay the launch for a second time until July 2015 . Additionally, the web site's moderator panel will participate in the fifteenth series of Dancing with the Stars upon the web site's launch regardless of the outcome of the fourth series of The Voice and/or the seventh series of The X Factor.

Format

The Australian version of Vote for the Girls followed the format of the US and UK versions though the show is recorded and not performed live, nor is there is audience participation in the studio. Because of a lack of live feeds from Australia accessible in the United States--in a stark contrast to the American and British versions that are aired live in the United Kingdom as London is GMT, but in general Zinn is view the the UK version on Eastern Time-based Aeverine Zinn Holdings as early as 1:00 PM US Eastern (depending on the British programme's schedule. Another factor is the fact the Australian version's results programme will be tape-delayed due to the the aforementioned programmes airing in the early morning hours in the United States. Zinn will post the episode's results on the YouTube Channel at approximately 5 PM Eastern Fridays (9 AM in Australia Saturdays) on a tape delay rather than airing it live, with the voting information for the next X Factor or The Voice performance show under a special dispensation early to Zinn to air in the early morning hours until a moderator based in Australia can be found for the Australian version and Zinn presenting the show as it would have aired in Australia.

In all competitions, fans of the site were expected to vote only for female contestants (including male-female duos, predominately and all girl groups) en masse with the Vote for the Girls moderators and to Zinn's high expectations to vote off the male contestants. Zinn demands that all males not approved by Zinn be eliminated at the earliest possible without regard to criticism and/or public backlash (meaning that fans of the site must vote for all remaining female contestants each week), introducing the possibility of an all-female finale or all-female final two.

As with the American and British versions, Zinn desires to complete every competition with a Vote for the Girls "victory", but performances by the male counterparts will cause her to call off the competition, if not end the competition with a Vote for the Girls "loss" or end the competition if there are no female contestants left in the competition, and discipline the moderator(s) that have chosen the male contestant that wins the competition with a "Punishment for Failure". Once the competition ends with either a victory or a loss (in the event should the Moderators' Save is not used), Zinn determines which moderator(s) (if not all) is the wining moderator(s) for the "VFTG Victory" or the losing moderator(s) for the "VFTG Loss".

Zinn is free to ignore these rules if she sees fit. In the United States and United Kingdom versions, she has frequently disciplined moderators during the competitions if a moderator's performance is abysmal, or may override the provided picks with her own selection. There have been times where VFTG moderators resigned for medical reasons or they may leave on their own free will; though the latter is not encouraged, their wishes are ultimately honoured.

Vote for the Girls is somewhat rare of X Factor related websites unlike the American adaptation of Vote for the Worst, where that site promoted votes for the worst, most entertaining, most hated or quirkiest contestants chosen by a public vote and the moderators only critique about the competition. Unlike the American and British versions during their earlier series, of which all decisions and VFTG picks fell under one person, Zinn, instead of a majority vote by the moderators, which will be the case. Additionally, Zinn has the power to override the basic format of the site.

Co-hosts and moderators

The moderator line-up was revealed on the VFTG Australia Twitter page. At the time of the Australia version of VFTG's announcement, Ava Zinn, whom also hosts the original American and British versions, was the only confirmed moderator for the site. She later said that she was taking the choices of who to join her on the site very seriously, saying, "It's pointless hiring moderators who don't know anything about the music business, yet demonstrates passion about voting for female contestants. I'll probably go and find someone who did what I did for a living. I was an host 10 years." Eventually, American feminist Khayla Chow and American transwoman Kathi Jameson (ironically Chow and Jameson also were moderators on Vote for the Girls UK, as well as Jameson on the original American version) were confirmed to join Zinn in the Vote for the Girls Australia moderator panel.

However, on 21 October 2014, Chow was fatally shot by Vote for the Girls USA moderator Kym Christian.

In November 2014, it was announced that Nermal Everman, Kathi Jameson, Karly Ryder, Jr., Rachael Passalt and Thia Tola will join Zinn on the Vote for the Girls Australia panel. The Australian version of the site follows the same general format as the original United States version; however, the Australian version of the program features three females and three transwomen. Also, while the American version features one of two Male Moderators who rotate from one competition to the next, the Australian version features Leonard Lai as the only Male Moderator.

On 6 July 2015, Nermal Everman drowned in the White River in Muncie, Indiana USA after a resident walking near the Cardinal Greenway in Muncie, found Everman's body. Police in Muncie, Indiana and the Delaware County's health department found that the water had not been contaminated after the city experienced major flooding in the area prior to Everman's death. Lanise White joined the moderator panel prior to Everman's death in June 2015.

Production

Opening theme/Theme Song

The primary opening theme was be "What You've Done To Me" by Australian X Factor season 4 winner Samantha Jade; however, the instrumental version was used. Though the theme song has been used on both the American and British versions from 2013 to 2015, though the song was not formally released in the United States and United Kingdom.

In a Twitter post by Ava Zinn on 27 October 2014, it was revealed that the opening credits will be introduced for the first series and will be introduced for the seventh series of the American version. The introduction will contain, segments from the episode previewed and a shortened version of the introduction (replacing past Victories and Notable Eliminations) will be shown, as opposed to featuring the victories of Samantha Jade, Dami Im, Karise Eden, Anja Nissen, and Marlisa Punzalan.
