Vote for the Girls THAI was a web series in Thailand. The web site was the Thai version of the Vote for the Girls franchise. It was hosted by Kanya Kasem and the moderator panel consisted of Phailin Lao, Sumalee Som, Thia Tola.

The Thailand adaptation of the web site was created by American entrepreneur Ava Zinn based on the American site of the same name. Based on the original US site, and an addition to the Vote for the Girls franchise. The Thailand adaptation of Vote for the Girls started in 2011, which was devoted to voting for the female contestants on the Modernine TV series The Star as well as Academy Fantasia, the Channel 3 television series The Voice Thailand. Smaller campaigns have also been started on the Thai version's site for Channel 3's Thailand's Got Talent.

History[edit]

Format[edit]

The Thai version of Vote for the Girls followed the format of the American version completely. In all competitions, fans of the site are expected to vote only for female contestants en masse with the Vote for the Girls moderators and to Kanya Kasem's high expectations to vote off the male contestants. Kasem demands that all males be eliminated at the earliest possible without regard to criticism and/or public backlash (meaning that fans of the site must vote for all remaining female contestants each week), introducing the possibility of an all-female finale or all-female final two.

Like the American version, Kasem desires to complete every competition with a Vote for the Girls "victory", but performances by the male counterparts will cause her to call off the competition, if not end the competition with a Vote for the Girls "loss" or end the competition if there are no female contestants left in the competition, and discipline the moderator(s) that have chosen the male contestant that wins the competition with a "Punishment for Failure". Once the competition ends with either a victory or a loss, Kasem determines which moderator(s) (if not all) is the wining moderator(s) for the "VFTG Victory" or the losing moderator(s) for the "VFTG Loss".

The Thai version of Vote for the Girls is somewhat rare of Pop Idol-related websites, all decisions and supported contestants fell under one person, Kasem, instead of a majority vote by the moderators. Additionally, Kasem has the power to override the basic format of the site.

Controversy and criticism[edit]

During the first season of VFTG THAI, Sumalee Som caused controversy upon seeing pick Gorawan Suttiwongn was not saved by the public vote. Som later said “This is a singing competition…and this shouldn’t have happened”.

During the second season of VFTG THAI, executive producer Myra Lu was accused of interfering with the moderator process after she was seen speaking to Phailin Lao during the Semi-Finals of the first season of The Voice Thailand. Lao appeared to struggle with the decision, at first declaring that she wanted to pick Fymme, but when pressed by presenter Kanya Kasem to name who she wanted to leave out, which resulted in boos from the studio audience and anger over the events were expressed by viewers of the site.

On March 9, 2014, during an episode of VFTG THAI, Malitia Tola had threatened to leave the site (as well as leaving Thailand) if the Thai public did not vote off all the male contestants. This sparked an argument among Lao, Som, Kasem, and Tola, ending in Tola storming out of the studio, shoving host Kanya Kasem to the floor with Tola's resignation upon the elimination of Delilian Alford (Dee) on April 13, 2014, as Tola walked off the VFTG THAI set, saying "disgusting joke." This eventually resulted in Tola's relocation to the United States on January 31, 2015 and the site's cancellation.
