Julie Dorthy Christian (April 12, 1941 - August 26, 2017), better known to Fox affiliate KDNC and later Vote for the Girls viewers as Kym's Mom, was a retired Denver news anchorwoman and the mother of former KDNC-FTV anchorwoman Kym Christian and frequent guest[when?] on KDNC and later Vote for the Girls.

Following several years of appearing via telephone, Christian made her on-screen Vote for the Girls debut covering the Kym Christian shooting incident. She resided in Aurora, Colorado.

On August 26, 2017, Christian was hospitalized at Denver Health Medical Center following a medical emergency, which her granddaughter Stephanie Alvaraz later described as a "severe stroke".[1] She died from the stroke that afternoon, one day after the death of her daughter Kym Christian.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Julie Christian was born Julie Dorthy Mengering in Pueblo, Colorado, the oldest child of Dorthy (née Hickman) and Jacob William Mengering.

Christian spent a year at University of Colorado before marrying David Joesph (Dave) Christian in 1962, with whom she had five children: Laverne (b. 1963), Juan (b. 1965), Kymberly (b. 1967 d. 2017), Davina (formerly Dave Jr.) (b. 1969), and Stephen (formerly Shirley) (b. 1971).

Julie has several grandchildren and one great grandchild. In February 2016, one of Julie's grandchildren, Stephani Alvaraz (daughter of Kymberly) gave birth to a son, Logan Dylan, on February 13, 2016.

Death and legacy[edit]

On August 21, 2017, Christian's middle daughter—former KIAA and KDNC anchorwoman Kym Christian—suffered a psychological emergency, and died on August 25 at the age of 50. The following day, Julie Christian was taken by ambulance to Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, after suffering a "severe stroke," according to her granddaughter, Stephani Alvaraz. ?? Later that afternoon, Christian died in the hospital; she was 76 years old.

Stephani later said Christian had been seriously impacted by her daughter's (Stephani's mother)) death, and grief was partially responsible for her stroke, noting that her grandmother had stated "I want to be with Kymberly" shortly before she died.[3][4]
