The Indiana Wheelchair Massacre is the twenty-fifth episode of the fourth season of Caprice & Ella, which aired on February 2, 2023. The episode deals with Ava having issues with a manual wheelchair and stairs.

Plot[edit]

Several weeks have passed after Caprice, Ella, and Ava relocated from Black Pine Flats to Golfview Apartments and unbeknownst to Ava, she confirms in the episode suffers not only her worst back injury since 1999, but also a sprain on her right foot as a result of Ava being forced to climb up and down a flight of stairs, which Ava states have become dangerous as Ava has been semi-handicapped. However, the episode begins as Caprice recently slaps, bites, and hisses at Breeanna and Ava asks Caprice to be more nicer to Breeanna, which Ava reveals in the episode that she is seven weeks pregnant at the time of taping in addition to Ella urinating herself on Breeanna's shirt a la R Kelly.

In an effort to make her home at Golfview accessible, Ava brings down a wheelchair (as previously seen in “Caprice & Ella Go to the Vet”) from the second floor to the first floor, much to the dismay of Golfview Apartments Proprty Manager Tara Fike. Rather than even try to work with Ava, Tara decides to issue Ava a lease violation after Ava had no other reasonable alternative but to lock the wheelchair outside the entrance and eventually moves it to outside Golfview Apartments’ property and files a formal complaint with local (Fort Wayne) government officials, namely the Fort Wayne Metro Human Relations and HUD.

Ava goes to the Parkview orthopedic walk-in clinic as well as a second walk-in clinic, where it is confirmed she did in fact suffer not only a major back spasm, in which Ava believes could have been prevented had a wheelchair ramp and access modifications were made now that Ava is effectively crippled from not only the back injury, but also the foot sprain.

While running an errand at Walmart on Coldwater Road, it is revealed that Ava used one of the so-called motorized shopping carts for the first time due to her recent injuries that could effectively render her permanently disabled, though Ava states she is semi-handicapped.

The next day, as the pain in her right foot flares up, Ava decides to use the wheelchair in question to get from Golfview Apartments to the CitiLink bus stop on Saint Joe Road and Roebuck Boulevard in front of Flagstar Bank. On two occasions, Ava is seen looking up to the sky and says, “Forgive me lord for what I’m about to do.”

While at the Fort Wayne Metro Human Relations Commission parking lot, Ava goes on a rant about how the wheelchair in question (revealed to be a late 1970's/early 1980's Everest and Jennings model) has never gave her problems with previous landlords from 2002 until December 6, 2022. During her rant, she gives Golfview the finger to the camera as well as saying "fuck you" as well as vowing to seeks revenge after getting a lease violation and threatens to "kick someone's ass up Saint Joe Road and down Saint Joe Center Road." However, Ava admits that she is willing to believe that had she known she was going to be semi-handicapped, which Ava omitted in the initial applcation, on the second floor (seen in "Breaking Boiling Point"), she would not have even recieved the lease violation or even needed the Fort Wayne Metro Human Relations Commission's intervention. Ava also reveals that there is a reason she did not include Breeanna to Ava's lease (as well as Ava's previous significant others Angie Nieves, Christy Johnson, Amanda Davidson, Kymberly Alvaraz, Elisa Everman, and Marti McDaniel), presumably due to domestic violence.

After Ava hops on the CitiLink, she states "I can't remember when I've done anything like this before, it's very unusual. It's been challenging" She cites her faith in the system and the difference between her injuries in Marion in 2002 and Fort Wayne in 2022, that led her to hop on the CitiLink on a manual wheelchair. The episode ends with Caprice and Ella realizing that Ava is standing up for what she believes in.

Cultural References[edit]

  • In the opening scene of the episode, instead of the usual theme song, a sequence similar to that of the 1986-95 NBC/ABC series Matlock is played, with Caprice portraying Ben Matlock, Ella portraying Charlene Matlock, Breeanna portraying Cassie Phillips and Ava portraying Tyler Hudson. It was the second episode of nine of which was the annual Caprice & Ella March Madness, which parodies opening sequences of other television series.
  • The title is a parody of the horror movie The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
  • The episodes seen in flashbacks of the wheelchair use are "Caprice & Ella Go to the Vet," "Ella Gets Microchipped," and "Ella Gets Spayed."
