During the first two seasons the supported contestants were chosen by Ava Zinn and since the third season the contestants were supported into three teams: "Team Ava", "Team Holly" and "Team Robyn". Each team of supported contestants are chosen by the site's moderators (the site doesn't use the term judges, Zinn perfers to use the term Moderators instead of coaches, experts, or judges), Zinn, Holly Everman, and Robyn Hurd as their first pick (the first pick usually a contestant from the moderator's home market or home state) to win American Idol. From season 3 through 5, the site added The X Factor and Duets. From season 4 onwards, Duets was replaced by The Voice. From season four to the fall cycle of the fifth season, a fourth team was added as a fourth moderator, Michelle Steele, joined the site and the moderator panel was split into two teams of two based on the moderator's gender identity: transwomen (Zinn and Steele on the purple team and Everman and Matthewson on the pink). Also in season 4, Hurd died of a stroke, leaving Zinn and Everman as the only two moderators to return from the previous year, where they have remained since. Zinn, Everman, and Steele were joined on the moderator panel by Hillary Matthewson and Ariel Swaringen. In season 5, Matthewson left the site, Zinn, Everman, Steele, Swaringen returned as moderators from the previous year. The site added a fifth and sixth team in the spring cycle as two moderators, Kellie Rock and Kathi Jameson, joined the panel and would eventually serve as replacements of Swaringen and Steele (both of them died during the fifth season's spring cycle). In season 6, Jameson left the site as Zinn, Everman, and Rock returned as moderators from the previous season. Julia Passalt, Lanise White, Rhonda Rhodes, Karly Ryder, Jr., Tracia Ward, Kendra Ray and Kym (Christian) Alvaraz joined the moderator panel as Passalt and Ward would eventually replace Jameson and Ryder mid-season with White and Rhodes as replacements of Swaringen and Steele. Also during season 6, it was announced that Kymberly Alvaraz would be joining Ava Zinn as a duo moderator under "Team Zinn" or "Team Ava & Kymberly" and Vote for the Girls UK moderator Nermal Everman, niece of Holly, would also join the moderator panel also as a duo moderator under "Team Everman" or Team Holly & Nermal" bringing the number of moderators up to ten instead of eight. In season 7, the number of moderators remained at ten moderators as it was announced that along with Ava & Kymberly, Holly & Nermal, Tracia, Lanise, and Kendra, and new moderators Thia Tola, Kathy Roberts, Perri Johnson (joining Everman after Nermal Everman died before the start of the seventh season) would also be joining the moderator panel while Kathi Jameson and  Karly Ryder, Jr. (now going by Karly Jameson) rejoining the moderator panel as the site's third duo moderator with Hillary Matthewson rejoined the moderator panel with Matthewson joining Tracia Ward as the site's fourth duo moderator.
