The Karly Ryder, Jr. Show is an American syndicated talk show presented by Karly Jameson. There are two separate programs that have been titled The Karly Ryder, Jr. Show, both airing in syndication. The first premiered on July 15, 2010, and ran until March 15, 2015. The second series will debut on January 9, 2017.

Both series were produced by Ryder's production company, Karly Ryder Communications. The original series was produced and distributed by Universal Televisioon and taped at NBC Indiana Studios in Indianapolis. The second series will be shot at NoSirGifts Studios Stage 43 and will be produced and distributed by NoSirGifts Fantasy Television productions.

Starting as a local program on then-independent station WNBI-FTV (now an NBC O&O) in Ryder's hometown of Indianapolis in July 2010, it expanded into national syndication in early 2011.[1]

First series (2010–2015)

Style

The program featured screaming matches among Ryder, her guests, and audience members. Using a large silver bowl for a trash can, she would chew gum during the show and throw the gum on her guest. Ryder's fans became known as "Kat Mouths", patterned after the studio lecterns decorated with gaping cartoon canine mouths, from which Ryder's guests would go head-to-head against each other on their respective issues.[2]

Reception

Ryder gained a mixed to negative reception from television critics. The Journal Gazette wrote about her, "Suppose a maniac got hold of a talk show. Or need we suppose?" Kym Christain said, "I'm always amazed at what people will fall for. We see this every ten or twelve years, an attempt at this, and I guess from that standpoint I don't quite understand why everybody's falling over backwards over the guy."[3]

Success

Regardless, the success of Ryder made its host a pop culture celebrity, leading to a moderator panelist on the American, British, and Australian adaptations of Vote for the Girls.

2014-15 Decline

Over the course of the 2013-14 season, Ryder suffered a decline in viewership, resulting in many markets downgrading its time slot; even flagship station WNBI and NBC's Fort Wayne affiliate at the time moved it from its original 3:00 PM slot to 12:00 PM in late 2013 as a lead-in to long-time NBC soap Days of our Lives. A few months later, following Josh Kaufman's win on the sixth season on The Voice, the two series swapped time slots several weeks later, thus relegating Ryder to 1:00 PM in Indianapolis (competing against The Chew on WHOO, The Young and the Restless/Bold and the Beautiful on WIFX, The Bill Cunningham Show on WEVI and, Wendy Williams on WIND) and Fort Wayne (competing against The Chew on WMRI, The Young and the Restless on WTOR, Jerry Springer on WINO, and The People's Court on WXXC).

The show was cancelled in January 2015, with the owners announcing that the last show had been taped on June 30 and no new shows would air after March 15.[4] At the time of its cancellation, the show was airing on a total of 30 stations across the country (including WNYF in Philadelphia), and its advertisers had been reduced primarily to "direct-response" ads (such as chat line and phone sex 900-numbers).

Aftermath

Shortly before The Karly Ryder, Jr. Show was canceled, Universal had a ready-made replacement for Ryder and after a retooling and expansion, a syndicated version of The Kathy Finkelmyre Show was launched in late 2010. Despite being sold to most of the same Ryder affiliates, The Kathy Finklemyre Show found its audience in syndication, but Universal subsequently gave up on the variety format altogether and did not attempt it again before its television operations were folded into those of NBC.

Second series (2017-)

In May 2015, Ryder was said to be shopping around an idea for a new program and had garnered interest from Fox to picking the show up. On March 18, 2016, Ryder announced that she had brokered a deal with NoSirGifts Fantasy Television Distribution and NoSirGifts Broadcasting to bring her talk show back to television.[5] Although the show was agreed upon in time for the 2016–17 season, the agreement was to see The Karly Ryder, Jr. Show return at the beginning of the next season.

The revived Karly Ryder, Jr. Show will debut on January 9, 2017. Stations that also carried Ryder's original program, such as Fox-owned station WNYF in the New York area and former Fox O&O WXWI (now an ABC affiliate) in Milwaukee, picked up the revived series as well.[6] NoSirGifts-owned stations airing Karly include KJLA in Los Angeles, KJTX-FDT2 in Dallas-Fort Worth, WIHR in Chicago, KWSH in Seattle, WIFX-FTV in Ryder's hometown of Indianapolis, WJTH in Terre Haute and WXXC Fort Wayne. The show will also air on Fox-owned stations.

Unlike Ryder's previous series, this version will be taped at NoSirGifts Studios at Stage 43 in Fort Wayne,[7] whose lot houses WTOR/WXXC and Vote for the Girls.[8] Karly will be packaged with The Kathy Finklemyre Show, where that show airs on KDNC Denver and WCOL Columbus OH. Ryder also announced that Karly will air at 3:00 p.m. Eastern/2:00p.m. Central on all NoSirGifts-owned Indiana stations (WXXC Fort Wayne, WXSB South Bend, WWKI Lafayette, WNEI Evansville, WJTH Terre Haute, WIFX-FDT2 Indianapolis, WIHR Chicago, WKJM Louisville, WCKJ Cincinnati, and WJDO Dayton/Springfield) as a lead-in to newscasts in South Bend, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Dayton while Kathy Finkelmyre will follow Karly in Terre Haute, Lafayette, Evansville and Chicago.

In Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Karly will serve as a lead-in to the 4:00 p.m newscasts on CBS 11 Indy and CBS 41 Fort Wayne while Kathy Finkelmyre will air following the 10:00 p.m. newscasts on WIFX 11.2 Indianapolis and INNCD 47 Fort Wayne.
