The Ava ZinnHolly Everman moderator rivalry is between American Vote for the Girls moderators Zinn and Everman. Since the April 28, 2010 launch of Vote for the Girls, it is an intra-market (as Zinn and Everman's hometowns are located in the same Marion-Muncie radio market and the Indianapolis television market), in-state, transwoman vs. woman, matchup between the two longest-tenured moderators in the state of Indiana.1 Thus, a Zinn-Everman moderator match-up can be referred to as "the shortest road trip in on the Vote for the Girls panel" or "The Battle of Indiana". As the moderators are on different teams based on sexual orentation and/or gender identity, the two moderators often participate every season when Zinn (a Van Buren, Indiana native that began her transition from male to female in 2004 on the Purple Team) compete against Everman (a Muncie, Indiana native that came out as bisexual in 2000 on the Pink team). The only other way the two moderators would go head to head would be if both Zinn and Everman's final supported female contestant made the finale, of which occurred during the second season of The X Factor in December 2012 as Zinn's pick of Carly Rose Sonenclar and Everman's pick of Fifth Harmony respectively finished second and third to "Tacky Stacky" in the web site's only loss on X Factor.

Since the web site's sixth season spring cycle starting with Kymberly Alvaraz's move from the pink to the purple team joining Zinn and Perri Johnson's arrival for the web site's seventh season, the rivalry is also be referred to as "Manning vs. Hasslebeck" due to Manning's popularity in Indinaapolis and Denver and Hasslebeck's popularity in Seattle and Indianapolis or "Colorado vs. Washington"

History[edit]

Ava Zinn (then known as Frank) previously maintained a very loyal long time friendship with her in-market counterpart, Holly Everman, since the two first met with Patrice Rafferty on December 28, 1990 in Marion, Indiana. Zinn was a seven year old boy from Van Buren, Indiana while Everman was a 10 year old girl from Muncie, Indiana. When Everman and Zinn became friends in 1990, Zinn and Everman were already close friends with Zinn's very first friend, Robyn Hurd (who was nearly 22 years Zinn's senior and 19 years Everman's senior), originally from Warren, Pennsylvania and whom had recently relocated from Pennsylvania to Indiana eleven years earlier while she was attending Purdue Univeristy.

Origins[edit]

The origins of this rivalry can be traced back to the late 1970's when Sabrina Everman (Holly's mother) and Margaret Zinn (Ava's mother) were rivals in Northeast Indiana, the former of whom proclaimed that Fort Wayne and Indianapolis are ready for another rivalry. Like the competitors in the Fort Wayne market as Sabrina moved from WFTW to WMRI (then known as WFAZ-FTV and had been sold to ATE Media Corporation founder Patrice Rafferty) in 1982, where she and Margaret Zinn became colleagues and fought for publicity, attention and fans. Since the both Sabrina Everman and Margaret Zinn worked together so infrequently while at WMRI, some, including people from Montpileier and Marion, have questioned whether the Sabrina and Margaret have a real rivalry.

Sabrina Everman, despite being 15 years younger than Margaret Zinn, was the more popular and well-educated while Zinn was the more established and seniority, but dropped out after middle school. Margaret gave birth to her first child (Albert) in October 1977 at age 33 while Everman had her first two children, Garfield and Elisa, respectively in June 1978 at age 20 and in December 1979 at age 21. The two mothers also had their youngest child again in the early 1980's with Everman giving birth to a respective third (Holly) and fourth child (Lynsey) in April 1980 at age 22 and May 1982 at age 24 and Zinn giving birth to her second child (Ava) seven months later in January 1983.

Everman impressed her new bosses at ATE Media (notably Patrice Rafferty) enough that Rafferty wanted to either move Everman to sister station WHOO-FTV (channel 24, then a CBS affiliate) in Indianapolis or remain at WFAZ in 1984. Despite having no formal education in broadcasting, she was named the best newscaster in Northeast Indiana by the Fort Wayne Press Club in 1987, beating out such competition as WFTW's Lynne Jackson (now Everman's colleague at WTOR) and WNDI's Karla Hensen (now at KJTX Dallas). By the end of 1989, after declining Rafferty's offer to anchor at WHOO, and watching the pilot of Hoosier Millionaire, Everman approached Rafferty, the elder Zinn, and Robyn Hurd about a children's program. The three women agreed to the project called Patrice, in which would teach young children the entertainment industry that would be rebroadcast as part of Patrice Rafferty's 30 Years of ATE Media Special in October 2012.

1990-2010: Background of the rivalry[edit]

After Patrice debuted on Saturday, December 28, 1990 at 10:00 AM on WFAZ-FTV, Robyn (then 28), Holly (then 9), and Ava (then known as Franky at age 6), eventually became closest of friends that would start a 23 year era of the so-called "Big Three" I-69ers: Hurd (Fort Wayne), Ava Zinn (Marion), and Holly Everman (Muncie). Patrice lasted 13 weeks, as Rafferty, a fan of Star Search, a program that was airing on all ATE Media-owned stations at the time, Rafferty became known and considered by many as the godmother and pioneer of two female anchor teams and the Vote for the Girls format that eventually lead to Zinn creating the popular and controversial Vote for the Girls format 18 years later in 2008.

After the Ed McMahon version of Star Search ended in 1995, Zinn (then 12) and Everman (then 15) had begun dating their first significant others, Zinn was in a relationship with Amanda Davidson (ended in 1997 after four years and replaced by Holly's sister, Elisa) and Everman was in a relationship with Adam "Butch" Quincy (ended in 2009 after 15 years and eventually married Zinn's then sister-in-law, Veronica Willis in 2012.) By 1996, Zinn had self-identified more as a female and in-line with many of her friends. In 1993, the annual Zinn family tradition known as "Santa Ava" declared its first winner (Alec Dailey), and has went on to become a tradition to the Aeverine Zinn Holdings empire ever since. The Santa Ava Best of Nice since 1993 have earned a lifetime recommendation and reference from Zinn--such individuals have either been promoted or went on to larger markets since their win.

From 1996 until 2004, Everman and Zinn were the target of persistent rumors that they were in a relationship. This rumor would be rendered moot on December 1, 2004--the day Ava Zinn began her gender transition from male to female. At one time, Robyn Hurd called Ava Zinn (before her transition) and Holly Everman respectively her "son-friend" and "daughter-friend."

2010-2012[edit]

2012-13: Post-Robyn Hurd era[edit]

Spring 2014: VFTG Brawl[edit]

Late in 2013, Everman became the winning moderator after her pick of Alex & Sierra won the third season of The X Factor

During the thirteenth season of American Idol, on April 3, 2014 Holly Everman commented after Sam Woolf was saved from elimination and learning about Rachael O'Connor's elimination and subsequent loss on The Voice UK for the British version of VFTG stating: "I denounce that Khayla Chow is no good as a Bi-black-bimbo when it comes to making picks to win these singing competitions." Everman later said that Chow had warned her she would be hit. A week later on April 10, 2014, Chow and Everman are shown verbally berating each other and get into a heated profanity-laced argument after Everman took offense of UK moderator counterpart Khayla Chow upon seeing that Everman's pick of Malaya Watson was announced as the act with lowest number of votes for Top 7 reveal night and Chow responded by shoving Everman in the face with both hands and onto the floor, which led to a physical confrontation between several moderators and audience members with Ava Zinn trying to keep Everman and Chow separated[1][2] . After the fight was broken up, an fan in the audience threw a drink at Chow. Chow then entered the audience and sparked a massive brawl, what has since become known as the Vote for the Girls brawl, between the moderators and the audience.

Hours later, on the early morning hours of April 11, 2014, Everman was arrested under suspicion of DUI in Indianapolis, Indiana. [3] According to a source that alerted Ava Zinn, Everman has had an ongoing alcohol problem since the elimination of Pia Toscano three years earlier.

Fall 2014: Team Holly & Nermal established[edit]

At the start of the sixth season, as part of the moderators' punishments for failing to support Christina Grimmie and Jena Asciutto in securing the web site's respective fourth consecutive Voice and second consecutive American Idol victory, Ava Zinn and fellow purple team transwoman moderator Kathi Jameson wore strapless tops with Zinn wearing thong panties occasionally as her own gender transition was not completed at the time (as Zinn says she has an "enlarged clitoris") and Jameson's completed in 2012, while Holly Everman and fellow pink team moderator Kellie Rock binding their breasts with Rock appearing as a Breast Cancer survivor if she had a double mastectomy and Everman (after shaving her traditionally long hair) appearing as a female-to-male transgender individual.

Since Zinn and Everman were the respective winning moderators of the fifth season of The Voice and the third season of The X Factor as part of their respective rewards (in addition to another moderator punishment since both Zinn and Everman had chosen eventual Voice season six winner Josh Kaufman as their Ava Zinn version of Vote for the Worst pick) for supporting Tessanne Chin and Alex & Sierra to the Vote for the Victory as well as an undefeated calendar year (known as a Pefect Year) a year earlier. Zinn (clad in a strapless jumpsuit) biked from Marion to Concannon's Bakery and Cafe in Muncie on July 19, 2014 and Zinn being awarded with four new pairs of shoes, a belly button piercing, an iPad and another gadget plus Zinn's laptop eventually being replaced after Zinn's significant other at the start of the web site's fall cycle of the fifth season , Mandy, caused the laptop to malfunction (and thus Ava unable to access iTunes for The Voice 5 Top 12).

Everman returned the favor by making the nearly 80 mile one-way bicycle trip from Indianapolis to Ava Zinn's hometown of Van Buren, Indiana on August 14. However, Everman had just recently separated (and eventually divorced) from her wife of two years and completed a month of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings before she could relocate outside of Indianapolis. Everman's bicycle trip spanned three days as she was relocating from Casleton to Marion beginning on the afternoon of August 12, 2014 when she biked from Castleton Square Mall in Castleton to Anderson to spend the night at the home of her sister-in-law and former VFTG moderator Hillary Matthewson, then on the morning of August 13, 2014 (by that morning, Everman had just separated from her wife, Veronica Willis, after Everman's first DUI arrest four months earlier and was completely gone from Indianapolis sans her car) departed for Marion, Indiana and moved in to an apartment complex near Five Points Mall. Then on August 14, 2014 Everman biked from Five Points Mall to the Van Buren Popcorn Festival in Zinn's hometown of Van Buren, Indiana. However, in a Facebook post by Everman, it was revealed that Everman biked two days from moving Indianapolis to Van Buren via bicycle. Then the following Thursday after the Popcorn Festival (August 21) Holly went back to Castelton to pick up her car after asking fellow moderator Julia Passalt to drive her to Castleton, unbeknownst to Passalt that Holly had been drinking that night.

On the early morning hours of August 22, 2014, Everman was arrested for her second DUI on the northeast side of Indianapolis after driving northbound on the southbound lanes of Binford Boulevard [3] , and was recorded as having a 0.17 percent blood-alcohol content. She was sentenced to one year probation in a Marion County, Indiana court in Indinapolis on September 10, 2014 and another year of probation and 40 hours of community service five days later in a Grant County court for her role in the Vote for the Girls brawl that began the brunt of Everman's troubles. She entered a rehabilitation clinic for alcohol abuse and anger management counseling as part of her court obligation, of which she is forbidden from consuming or possessing alcohol and her driving privileges were revoked for a period of six months and 20 days (of which ended on February 28, 2015). She will be subject to random drug testing as a condition of her probation. In addition, the judge stipulated that any subsequent OWI or DUI charge in a three year period will be treated as a felony. Everman was also forbidden from doing any media interviews or making comments related to the Vote for the Girls (other than voting but cannot post who she voted for) on social media during the suspension.

On August 25, 2014, shortly after pleading guilty to DWI and being sentenced to six months of probation, Everman was suspended by Ava Zinn for twelve weeks (with two weeks credit) and fined $1.2 million.[4] She returned to the Moderator panel on October 27, 2014 and her Dancing with the Stars pick chosen by her niece, Nermal, won the show's 19th season. This drew considerable controversy as Everman's niece, Nermal, filled in for Holly in the interim. Nermal had inherited the moderator role that her father (and Holly's transgender sister-in-law), Michelle Steele, held before Steele's 2014 death from a car accident. However, Nermal Everman was initially dismissed from the American version of Vote for the Girls due to Aeverine Zinn Holdings (owner of Vote for the Girls franchise) strict family contractual restrictions disallowing immediate family members serving as moderators to protect the Vote for the Girls' ratings and revenue; Nermal Everman could serve as moderator on the American version, but only off-camera, including making frontrunner picks, except for common primary picks not claimed by Holly Everman, so Nermal's mother, Elisa Steele (and the sister of Holly Everman) approached Ava Zinn about allowing Nermal to become a moderator of Vote for the Girls UK as a birthday present for Nermal after she chose to resign from the American version completely and this came in handy after Holly's arrest.

Notable moments[edit]

December 2012: Carlygate[edit]

On December 20, 2012, the final result sparked major controversy when then-competing web site Vote for the Worst pick defeated Zinn's pick of Carly Rose Sonenclar and Everman's pick of Fifth Harmony; after hearing this, Everman unleashed a torrent of expletives on Facebook. In one such notable post Everman called someone a "f**king c**t" to a woman she identified as Heather after the woman got into a physical fight 25 years earlier which resulted in Everman's sister (Elisa) being expelled from Claypool Elementary School in Muncie. The woman posted on the web site's Facebook page:

Did a b**ch (Holly Everman) just call me a f**king c**t cause Tate Stevens won Xfactor? (Cracks me the f**k up) Ctfu yeaaap sure did. (Laughing my f**king a** off) lmfao, bitches I am a grown a** woman and ain't got time to argue over (who the f**k) wtf won Xfactor. BUT TATE WON BAHAHA HOPE I DON'T HAVE TO F**K A B**CH UP OVER A F**KING T.V SHOW....hahaha
—Facebook post from December 20, 2012[5]

During The X Factor season final performance, members of the public were also outraged when an unnamed producer seen approaching Zinn (who is also the executive producer) and speaking to her. This sparked rumours that the producer told Zinn vote off Fifth Harmony, and that Zinn may have been unsure whether to go with her own feelings or follow the producer's instructions.

Everman would go on the following season as the winning moderator as her pick of Alex & Sierra would go on to the The X Factor 3 finale in which Alex & Sierra was announced the winner while at the same time became not only the web site's first ever male victory of X Factor, but a perfect fiscal calendar year (2013–a feat never before accomplished in the web site's history as Everman's American Idol 12 pick Candice Glover would be announced the winner of American Idol and Zinn's respective The Voice 3 and 4 picks Danielle Bradbery and Tessanne Chin would be announced the respective winners of their seasons on The Voice) and with Alex & Sierra's win, Zinn's American Idol 12 pick (Angie Miller) was inducted into the Vote for the Girls Hall of Fame.

Meanwhile Zinn would go on the following X Factor season after the eliminations of Ellona Santiago and Rion Paige following through on her threat of auctioning off her virginity to the highest female bidder if a female contestant finishes in second place or worse. Zinn did in fact, auction off her virginity to Kymberly Alvaraz in the summer of 2014.

March 2015: Zinn tirade[edit]

After the American Idol 14 Top 12 result on March 12, 2015, Ava Zinn unleashed a torrent of expletives and threats designed to motivate her fellow purple team moderators. In one portion she exclaims she is "f**king tired of losing to Holly." Unknown to most, the cameras were still rolling and was included in the web site's sixth season finale. Zinn and Alvaraz's pick of Nick Fradiani would go on to the American Idol 14 finale in which Fradiani became the winner of American Idol (and become the web site's first male victory on Idol) while Everman's pick (Joey Cook) finished in seventh place.
