Template:VFTG UK 2 Changes

From Ava Zinn Wiki

Many changes were introduced this series, from the format to the personnel of the site. Nermal Everman and Tracia Ward joined Ava Zinn as moderators following the departures of Ariel Swaringen (died 22 March 2014), Kathi Jameson (left to focus on the U.S. version), and Khayla Chow (sacked on 18 September 2014). The site was planning to add ITV's Rising Star upon the launch in March 2015 before the broadcaster announced in September it was a no go.

There was speculation that the site will add Britain's Got Talent as a make-up competition following the American version's decision to add America's Got Talent and the American version of So You Think You Can Dance during the summer months as make-up competitions. The site couldn't add the British version of So You Think You Can Dance due to that programme being axed in 2011.

In August 2014, it was confirmed that VFTG UK will indeed add Britain's Got Talent and Strictly Come Dancing as a make-up competition following the American version's decision to add the respective American counterparts, America's Got Talent and Dancing with the Stars as make-up competitions.

In September 2014, Ava Zinn announced that the site's web shows' opening round (on Rising Star) and quarter-finals (battle rounds and Knockouts on The Voice UK and the six-seat bootcamp on The X factor) were axed with the eleventh series of The X Factor[1] Speaking on the change, she said "It [opening round and quarter-finals] was the one element of the site I wasn't happy with, and it looked too similar to what everybody else is doing."

These above changes all proved to be in place once the Strictly Come Dancing 12 result shows began airing but were also accompanied by a number of other format tweaks. These additional changes most notably include the fact that the season will crown two victories in the event should a female win (typically a female winning the competition and a previous VFTG pick, or if two females (two VFTG picks) are in the final two, then they are declared co-champions).

Moderator's Save[edit]

Another change in the VFTG UK format is the Moderator's Save, an element first used in Italy's Vota Femminili (Vote for the Girls (Italy)) and Rösta för Flickorna (Vote for the Girls (Sweden))[2] that has been used in other adaptations of VFTG. The moderators were given the power to exercise a veto on X Factor and The Voice UK and one during the make-up competition and spare the site from a Vote for the Girls Loss for that particular competition. This can only be invoked up until the semi-finals of The Voice UK and/or X Factor or before the Britain's Got Talent or Strictly Come Dancing final. If the Moderators' Veto is used in a make-up competition, the moderators will not get to choose any Vote for the Girls wild card picks on The Voice and/or X Factor because no victory nor loss is declared. The Moderator's Veto can only be used twice per series (an additional Veto can be used in the make-up competition) and it must be unanimous. The new format change was revealed on 23 November 2014. The first recipients of the Moderators' Save were Fleur East on X Factor when it was announced she was runner-up on 14 December 2014, which allowed the site to declare its second consecutive X Factor victory and Lucy O'Byrne on The Voice UK pending the final outcome.

Moderators, presenters and other personnel[edit]

On 22 March 2014, Ariel Swaringen, who was a moderator on VFTGUK moderator panel from its inception in the first series, died from natural causes.[3] [4] On 7 April 2014, Kathi Jameson announced that she would be leaving VFTGUK after one series, with a statement saying, "After some long ... hard ... thoughts ... I didn't feel like Vote for the Girls UK was the right fit for me." However the reports suggest that Jameson was sacked by the VFTG UK webmaster Ava ZInn. Jameson has indicated that her troubles with her transition from male to female was the primary reason she signed up to do Vote for the Girls UK, yet had stated that she would remain on the American version (and later sacked on 18 September 2014). On 23 June, Tracia Ward announced on during an interview with Fiona Johnson confirming she would be joining the moderator panel (in addition to the U.S. version).

On 11 July, Vote for the Girls USA moderator Holly Everman on her Facebook that her niece, Nermal Everman, was confirmed as a moderator. Nermal had inherited the moderator role that her father, Michelle Steele, held from the American counterpart. However, she was dismissed from the American version of VFTG due to Aeverine Zinn Holdings' (owner of Vote for the Girls franchise) strict family contractual restrictions disallowing immediate and extended family members serving as moderators to protect the Vote for the Girls' ratings and revenue; in the case of Nermal Everman, she is the niece of current VFTG USA co-host Holly Everman and daughter of former VFTG USA moderator Michelle Steele, and Nermal's auntie Holly has been with the American version since its debut in April 2010. Nermal Everman could serve as moderator on the American version, but only off-camera, including making frontrunner picks, except for common primary picks not claimed by Holly Everman, so Nermal's mother, Elisa Steele (and the sister of Holly Everman) approached Ava Zinn about allowing Nermal to become a moderator of Vote for the Girls UK as a birthday present for Nermal after she chose to resign from the American version completely. As mentioned above, Nermal Everman is the niece of of VFTG USA co-host Holly Everman, which would have come in handy had Holly Everman resign from the American version. This issue has also affected many other members of the same immediate family that have worked with Ava Zinn over the years, Nermal Everman was officially dismissed from the American version in August 2014.

Ava Zinn confirmed her return for her second series as presenter of the main site after initially posting on her Twitter on 14 April 2014, that a second series of VFTG UK would be postponed until as late as August 2015 as a result of Chow's actions after the first ever loss on the site and subsequent physical clash with Holly Everman on the U.S. version. Zinn later retracted her post and announced that a second series will begin in August 2014. Chow was eventually sacked on 18 September 2014 and two new moderators, American news presenters Kendra Ray and Rhonda Rhodes, both transwomen, joined the moderator panel to replace Chow. Ray and Rhodes were officially introduced on 4 October 2014.

Britain's Got Talent[edit]

The web site was planning to participate in the Britain's Got Talent make up competition, but due to Ava Zinn being the winning moderator of the series (with her Strictly Come Dancing picks Caroline Flack and Frankie Bridge respectively the winner and runner-up and her final picks of Fleur East named runner-up on X Factor and Lucy O'Byrne of The Voice UK), the moderators did not participate in the ninth series of Britain's Got Talent.

Guest Moderators[edit]

Several changes were planned for the second series. Ava Zinn was considering adding a fifth and sixth moderator and two guest moderators invited by Zinn to participate during the competition, this is the first series where guest moderators were invited to participate in the live shows of the competition following Khayla Chow's sacking on 18 September 2014, Ava Zinn filled the vacancy seats by a guest moderator invited by Zinn to participate during the competition (usually as part of a crossover with the American version of Vote for the Girls). The guest moderators featured were:

Notes
  1. ^ After Chow's sacking 18 September, Vote for the Girls USA moderators Julia Passalt and Kellie Rock filled in as guest moderators until Kendra Ray and Rhonda Rhodes became permanent moderators to replace Khayla Chow.
  2. ^ Kendra Ray and Nermal Everman were unable to attend the result and Ava Zinn was only available via pre-recorded clips following an incident that occurred on the American version on 21 October 2014. So Stephani Alvaraz filled in as Ava Zinn's co-host and filled in guest moderator for Kendra Ray while Rachael Passalt filled in for Kendra Ray.
  3. ^ After Rhonda Rhodes' death on 14 March, Vote for the Girls USA suspended moderator Lanise White filled in as guest moderators for the remainder of the series.
  4. ^ Ava Zinn was unable to present The Voice UK 4 shows after her arrest on 12 March 2015 so Zinn's partner, Kymberly Alvaraz filled in as host for the remainder of the series.
