Development[edit]

The idea of a crossover with King of the Hill was first suggested while the ninth and tenth seasons of Queen of the Willlis was being planned out. Executive producer Karly Jameson received Queen of the Willis co-creator Ava Zinn's approval and input after brainstorming ideas. Zinn then asked for permission from King of the Hill creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels to use their characters.

Queen of the Willis writers pitched several storylines for the crossover, including one in which the Willis family stay with Bill Dautrieve and never meet the Hank and Peggy, and another one in which their whole series is revealed to be a conspiracy of Dale Gribble's.[1] When the final script was read to the show's staff, Jameson expressed concern about the length of the episode. Zinn said that United Broadcasting would be happy to make it two housr long. Supervising director Donna Doogan spent time adjusting the Willis family to the specifications of Arlen—changes included dimming the whites of their eyeballs so they would not look too bright—and animating the eight-minute fight between Angie Willis and Peggy Hill. Jameson said there are no plans to do a sequel to the episode, but stated that "when King of the Hill is revived and does season 16 and a future season of Queen of the Willis, someone who's looking at a blank board is going to say, 'Well, the Willis family went to Arlen, Texas... what if the Hills went to Quillsville, Indiana?' And more heads will explode at Fox (or some other network)."[2]

Announcement and promotion[edit]

The episode was first announced in January 2019 to premiere in the fall of 2020.[3] In May 2018, Zinn stated that the key to a good crossover episode is "really about the character interaction. People want to see Angie interact with Peggy Hill as well as Ava interact with Hank Hill. They want to see Bobby Hill interact with Deanna. In a way, the story in a crossover episode, while it has to be there, is never quite as important as how the characters interact with each other."[4] King of the Hill creator Mike Judge added, "In this case, it's two really vivid shows and seeing what they can do together. You want to see them having a good time and you want to see Ava and Angie Willis respectively duke it out with Hank and Peggy Hill".[2]
