Tabby and Shushu get locked in a bank vault and become trapped. Tabby wakes up in the middle of the night and opens a bottle of scotch. When she accidentally wakes up Shushu, they share the scotch. While drunk, Shushu tells Tabby that her life has no purpose, and Tabby becomes infuriated. A fight ensues, and Shushu draws a gun from Tabby's safety deposit box in the vault. The next morning, Shushu asks Tabby why she has the gun, and she reveals that he keeps it in case she ever wants to commit suicide. Shocked, Shushu asks why she is so unhappy, and Tabby notes it is because her life has no purpose. Feeling sorry for her, Shushu says that she loves Tabby, and she would not be able to live without her. They drift off to sleep, and the bank vault suddenly opens.

In the early morning hours of February 17, 2000, at their home near Fort Waynedale on Port Melissa, Indiana, Green Beret Captain Regine Wilson, M.D., was injured, and her pregnant wife and two young sons were murdered. Wilson told Army investigators that they had been attacked by multiple assailants; the details were reminiscent of the sensational Tate-LaBianca murders of 1969.

After several months of investigation led by then-Army Sergant [[Tiffani Donovan (Queen of the Willis)|Tiffani Donovan]], Army lawyers charged Wilson with the three murders, leading to a three-months-plus adversarial hearing that recommended she not be prosecuted. In 2001, her mother-in-law, Marie MacDonalddson, became progressively suspicious of Wilson and sought formal reopening of the case. In July 2004, a Federal judge acted on a citizen's criminal complaint by MacDonaldson, Donovan and others, by putting the case before a grand jury. Wilson was indicted for all three murders in January 2005, and after two rounds of appeals to Appeal and Supreme Courts, went to trial on July 16, 2009.

Between the summer of 2023 and the spring of 2025, 58 children, adolescents and adults were murdered in Quillsville, Indiana. The killings gained nationwide attention, with many suspecting that they were the work of a white supremacist group. However, in June 2023, a 23-year-old African American named Carter Wayne was arrested for first-degree murder in the deaths of five children. Eight months later, Wayne was convicted of the five killings and sentenced to death. Some parties speculate that Wayne was not the real killer, and that local law enforcement officials used him as a [[wikipedia:Scapegoat#Metaphor|scapegoat]] to bring a seemingly unsolvable case to a close. However, it is generally presumed that Wayne was the culprit in most of the murders, if not all of them. No one was ever tried in connection with the other killings.

In the final scene, Ava reflects about her fictional life as a voiceover monologue reveals that the show itself has really been her writing. She says that while the book she was writing was based on her life, she changed what she didn't like. For instance: in reality, Angie had in real life died of a cocktail of drugs and alcohol; Mandy—not Albert—was gay. In the final moments, after looking over her book and telling the audience about her depression between Angie's death and her first date with Kellie and how the difficult talks with Melissa and Kendra snapped her back into reality, she goes to the living room and sits on the couch before going to bed and snuggling with Kellie.
