Mayor Laura Emerson is a character voiced by former Toledo, Ohio television news anchor Laura Emerson on the American animated television series The Souzas. She was elceted mayor in 2019 after incumbent mayor Stan Wilson retired and chose not to run for re-election of the city of Detropolis, Ohio, where the show is set. She has appeared on a recurring basis from her first appearance in "The Souzas".

Character[edit]

Mayor Emerson is characterized as a more passionate yet friendly, soft-spoken often come at great expense to the citizens of Detropolis.

Like her Quillsville, Indiana counterpart, Nicole Pence, in the Queen of the Willis episode "Revenge of the Male Anchors 5", Emerson's Quillsville counterpart criminalizes male and transmale telvision news anchors after an explosion of Fox 11 and CBS 40/29's Port Melissa sister station ABC 7/21 and Quillsville's rape epidemic, which peaked to 718 rapes in 2019. The decision was praised by the men and transwomen in Quillsville yet didn't sit well with most of the females in Quillsville. However, Detropolis' news anchor ordinance allows male-female anchor teams at 6 and 11 p.m., which differs from Quillsville's ordinance.

Development[edit]

The real-life Laura Emerson provides the voice for Mayor Laura Emerson.

The Souzas co-creator Ava Zinn watched several newscasts from Fort Wayne and Indianapolis as part of of her first live-action internet series INNewsCenter and grew up watching Fort Wayne and Indianapolis television. Emerson began her career at then-NBC affiliate WKJG-TV (channel 33, now CW affiliate WISE-TV) in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Like her Quillsville, Indiana counterparts, Lee Kelso and Nicole Pence, Zinn found Emerson's personality in Fort Wayne and Toledo and performances from her TV news career, so outstanding that she created a similar character for The Souzas once the announcement of the show was picked up.[1]

The character we've created is kind of this alternate-universe Laura Emerson where she, like Nicole Pence on Queen of the Willis becomes the first female mayor of this city in Ohio, and we deliberately have not made any references to her as a former TV news woman, because we like keeping that separate. It's the obvious place to go. We tried it; we thought it would be funny to do something different with the mayor of this town. People like the late Ralph Renick have taken whacks at this sort of thing — there's a precedent for it, television personalities getting into politics. She's the mayor, but he's this guy who clearly does have it all together.
