Plot[edit]

Shortly after having brunch with his friend Heather Westerfield, Mark Chappington, a transgendered man who is eight months pregnant, is brutally attacked and left for dead in the road. Mark is rushed to the hospital in the hopes that he and his baby can be saved. After learning Mark texted his husband Laine about a fight with Heather, Sgt. Lilly Rush question Heather, who admits that she resented that Mark was able to get pregnant so easily, despite medically and transitioning from female to male while she has struggled for years, but denies hurting her friend. Mark’s husband, Laine, and stepson, James, rush to the hospital, and both are shocked by news of the attack. At the scene, Officers Jarrett Dailey and Elaine Reed follow the blood trail left by Mark to another road and conclude she was likely carjacked. Helicopters spot Mark’s car, and Ava and Adrienne cut the car off. Two men flee the scene, running into a bar. One of the men throws a picture from the bar’s wall at Fansler, while the other fires a gun in the middle of the crowded bar. Though the man with the gun escapes after tossing his weapon, the CSIs manage to apprehend the other man. Lt. Nick Jeffries is upset when Ava takes the photograph the suspect threw at Adrienne, telling the CSI it’s one she took herself.

Officers Kymberly Millspaugh and Ramona Battishill go over the car, positing that the airbag deployed and noticing the car was keyed recently. While Officer Reed comforts Mark in the hospital, Natalia gets a hit on the gun, which was used in an armed robbery, and identifies their missing suspect as Kingston Novak, a known associate of Sam Franco, the man they have in custody. Ava and Lilly gets Sam to talk, leading the team to a chop shop, where they’re surprised to discover James Chappington is working. Ava and Lilly questions the teen, who admits he keyed Mark’s car after his father went back on a promise to buy James a car, opting to get one for Mark instead. James insists he didn’t hurt Mark, but Lilly is skeptical. Though Laine doesn’t recognize either of Mark’s attackers and Mark can’t remember the attack, he does identify Kingston Novak as Heather Westerfield’s trainer. When Officers Dailey and Reed question Heather again, she expresses shock over Kingston’s involvement, and maintains it’s a coincidence.  Officers Reed and Dailey go over surveillance photos of Mark recovered from the chop shop and notice an imperfection on the photos that matches one on the photograph thrown at Adrienne Fansler. Lieutenant Jeffries is questioned by Melissa Rose, who tells them that Kingston had him take pictures of a transman but didn’t tell him why. Telling him that he could be charged as an accomplice, the CSIs talk her into giving up Kingston’s location.

Ava, Adrienne, and Lilly arrest Kingston at his apartment, and discover the severed airbag from Mark’s car there. Mark is rushed to surgery after his vitals start to crash, and an enraged Laine attacks Kingston with a knife as he’s being led up to the police station. Ava and Adrienne match the airbag to Mark’s car, and realize it didn’t deploy because of sabotage, which also caused the steering wheel to lock. Ava realizes someone wanted gary to be hurt in this accident, and she recalls Laine never asked about his unborn child, just his husband. Ava matches marks on the steering wheel to Laine’s knife, confirming he sabotaged the car. Ava confronts Laine: he hired Kingston and Sam to attack his husband, and then tried to kill Kingston to make sure he stayed quiet. Laine admits he was behind it, but that it was supposed to be a simple carjacking—the men weren’t supposed to attack Mark. He maintains he loves his husband, but he didn’t want another child. Having James ruined his first marriage, and he didn’t want to lose Mark to a baby. Disgusted, Lilly Rush arrests him. Mark gives birth to a baby girl, while Ava returns home and tells Angie about the baby, and Angie replies “Happy Birthday, Ava.”
