The Everman–Rock rivalry, dubbed The Battle of Columbus, Ohio by fans, is a rivalry between American Vote for the Girls moderators Holly Everman and Kellie Rock. It has produced 7 of the 8 Vote for the Girls victories in the site's history. With Kellie Rock's win with DaNica Shirey as the moderators's save was used to spare the web site following Shirey's elimination on December 2, 2014, Rock leads the all-time series with her five wins as moderator to Everman's two.

Geography, friendship, siblings, and female birth sex add to this rivalry. Everman (Muncie, Indiana) and while Hurd/Rock (Warren, Pennsylvania) are in the center of the Buckeye state, and essentially split Ohio. Vote for the Girls webmaster Ava Zinn were (and to this day, still are) longtime close friends with Robyn Hurd and Holly Everman (Hurd was Zinn's first friend despite Hurd being 22 years Zinn's senior from January 4, 1989 until Hurd's death from a stroke on May 24, 2012 and Everman has been close friends since December 28, 1990).

The rivalry would later be fueled by sociocultural differences.[citation needed] Although Ohio is geographically between Indiana and Pennsylvania, Muncie, Indiana identifies more with East Central Indiana while Warren, Pennslvania identifies more with the Northwest Pennsylvania (particularly in nearby Pittsburgh)[citation needed].

From the website's launch on April 28, 2010, Everman and Hurd (later Rock) first competed as opposing moderators, except in Summer 2011 (Holly Everman was mourning the death of her brother, Garfield after he was killed by drunk driver on March 31, 2011), summer 2012 (Holly Everman was in her honeymoon with her then-wife, Veronica Willis, and Frank Davidson filled in for her during the Duets competition and Hilalry Matthewson filled the remainder of Hurd's term until the end of the web site's spring cycle of the fourth season) and from Matthewson's departure until the fall cycle of the web site's fifth season when Robyn's sister Kellie Rock joined the moderator panel.

History[edit]

2010-2013: Everman-Hurd rivalry era[edit]

Spring 2014 to present: Everman-Rock rivalry era[edit]

During the thirteenth season of American Idol, on April 3, 2014 Holly Everman commented after Sam Woolf was saved from elimination and learning about Rachael O'Connor's elimination and subsequent loss on The Voice UK for the British version of VFTG stating: "I denounce that Khayla Chow is no good as a Bi-black-bimbo when it comes to making picks to win these singing competitions." Everman later said that Chow had warned her she would be hit. A week later on April 10, 2014, Chow and Everman are shown verbally berating each other and get into a heated profanity-laced argument after Everman took offense of UK moderator counterpart Khayla Chow upon seeing that Everman's pick of Malaya Watson was announced as the act with lowest number of votes for Top 7 reveal night and Chow responded by shoving Everman in the face with both hands and onto the floor, which led to a physical confrontation between several moderators and audience members with Ava Zinn trying to keep Everman and Chow separated[1][2] . After the fight was broken up, an fan in the audience threw a drink at Chow. Chow then entered the audience and sparked a massive brawl, what has since become known as the Vote for the Girls brawl, between the moderators and the audience. During the argument, Chow was speaking to Kellie Rock. The microphone was not live. Rock recalled that from her role as anchorwoman and recalling a conversation with Kristina Chow while Rock was on assignment when she was a reporter in Tampa that Khalya Chow's personality and "there was no way we were going to put an open mic in front of [Khayla] in that situation." Andrea Jameson later stated that Khayla Chow was following advice she had received on how to calm down and avoid trouble in a volatile situation. After unsuccessfully attempting to break up the confrontation, Zinn prepared to eject various moderators before the taping resumed.

Ninety seconds after Chow shoved Everman, most of the moderators were huddled at midstage, attempting to calm down Chow. (Kathi Jameson was the only Vote for the Girls moderator to not leave her seat during the entire incident, though she was struck in the face by an unknown object and wound up with a black eye; others became automatically eligible for one-episode suspensions. ) Chow remained approximately 20 feet from the set's entrance apparently angered Everman, who threw a towel at Chow. An audience member, Marlena Watts (whom was later revealed to support eventual Voice winner Josh Kaufman and Sam Woolf), then threw a cup of a beverage at Chow while she retreated.[3] The drink hit Chow in the neck.[1] Chow ran into the audience and grabbed a woman whom she mistakenly believed was responsible. Rock and Zinn attempted to hold back Chow and was trampled in the effort, suffering five fractured vertebrae and a gouge on her head.[2] Rock's niece, Maribel Mort, then ran into the stands and punched a fan in the face in retaliation for the woman throwing a drink over Chow while she was being restrained by other spectators. Other Vote for the Girls officials also quickly entered the stands to retrieve Chow and Mort, and to break up the fighting. Watts punched Chow in the head from behind (causing both Chow and Mort to hit her). More fans in the audience then began throwing drinks and other objects, while a number of fans spilled out on to the set.[1]

The episode was called and eventually the remainder of the season was called off on April 18, 2014 (unaired episodes from that season were later shown in the sixth season premiere ("Ava's Virginity Auction") on July 11, 2014). More beverages and debris were thrown at the moderators and other personnel as they were escorted from the set by Zinn. Fans booed the moderators as they left the set and showered them with drinks as they walked under the tunnel to the dressing room.[2]

In the Vote for the Girls dressing room, Rock angrily confronted Zinn over her intervening Everman over Chow. Chow asked Rock whether she thought the moderators would get in trouble. Rock responded, "We'll be very fucking lucky if we have a motherfucking job", and the conversation convinced an amazed Everman and Jameson that Chow "wasn't in her right mind to ask that question."

Hours later, on the early morning hours of April 11, 2014, Everman was arrested under suspicion of DUI in Indianapolis, Indiana. [4] According to a source that alerted Ava Zinn, Everman has had an ongoing alcohol problem since the elimination of Pia Toscano three years earlier.

At the start of the sixth season, as part of the moderators' punishments for failing to support Christina Grimmie and Jena Asciutto in securing the web site's respective fourth consecutive Voice and second consecutive American Idol victory, Kellie Rock and Holly Everman binded their breasts with Rock appearing as a Breast Cancer survivor as if she had a double mastectomy and Everman (after shaving her traditionally long hair) appearing as a female-to-male transgender individual.

On the early morning hours of August 22, 2014, Everman was arrested for her second DUI on the northeast side of Indianapolis after driving northbound on the southbound lanes of Binford Boulevard [4] , and was recorded as having a 0.17 percent blood-alcohol content. She was sentenced to one year probation in a Marion County, Indiana court in Indinapolis on September 10, 2014 and another year of probation and 40 hours of community service five days later in a Grant County court for her role in the Vote for the Girls brawl that began the brunt of Everman's troubles. She entered a rehabilitation clinic for alcohol abuse and anger management counseling as part of her court obligation, of which she is forbidden from consuming or possessing alcohol and her driving privileges were revoked for a period of six months and 20 days (of which ended on February 28, 2015). She will be subject to random drug testing as a condition of her probation. In addition, the judge stipulated that any subsequent OWI or DUI charge in a three year period will be treated as a felony. Everman was also forbidden from doing any media interviews or making comments related to the Vote for the Girls (other than voting but cannot post who she voted for) on social media during the suspension.

On August 25, 2014, shortly after pleading guilty to DWI and being sentenced to six months of probation, Everman was suspended by Ava Zinn for twelve weeks (with two weeks credit) and fined $1.2 million.[5] She returned to the Moderator panel on October 27, 2014 and her Dancing with the Stars pick chosen by her niece, Nermal, won the show's 19th season. This drew considerable controversy as Everman's niece, Nermal, filled in for Holly in the interim. Nermal had inherited the moderator role that her father (and Holly's transgender sister-in-law), Michelle Steele, held before Steele's 2014 death from a car accident. However, Nermal Everman was initially dismissed from the American version of Vote for the Girls due to Aeverine Zinn Holdings (owner of Vote for the Girls franchise) strict family contractual restrictions disallowing immediate family members serving as moderators to protect the Vote for the Girls' ratings and revenue; Nermal Everman could serve as moderator on the American version, but only off-camera, including making frontrunner picks, except for common primary picks not claimed by Holly Everman, so Nermal's mother, Elisa Steele (and the sister of Holly Everman) approached Ava Zinn about allowing Nermal to become a moderator of Vote for the Girls UK as a birthday present for Nermal after she chose to resign from the American version completely and this came in handy after Holly's arrest.
