Dancing with the Stars XXI[edit]

Couples[edit]

On August 19, 2015, nine professional dancers were revealed during Good Morning America. Karina Smirnoff, who did not appear in season 20 returned for season 21. Anna Trebunskaya and Louis van Amstel would be returning after a five-season hiatus. Additionally, Lindsay Arnold would also be returning after spending the last four seasons in the troupe. While Peta Murgatroyd (who was to be paired with Andy Grammer) was originally announced as a professional, was sidelined for the season by an ankle injury;[1] Artem Chigvintsev and Kym Johnson also did not return. Bindi Irwin was the first celebrity revealed on August 24,[2] on GMA; other celebrities were revealed at different dates through different media. The full cast of celebrities and professional dancers was revealed on September 2, 2015, on GMA.[3][4]

During the show, two celebrities (Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Tamar Braxton) withdrew during the competition, marking the first time two contestants withdrew in midseason (Nancy O'Dell and Jewel both withdrew from Season 8 before the first episode).

The site participated in the 21st season of Dancing with the Stars as a built-in make-up competition. As before Ava Zinn breaks the moderators into two teams based on gender identity and/or sexual orientation, with Everman, Johnson, Rock, Tola and Ward on the pink team, and Passalt, Ray, Rhodes, Zinn and Alvaraz on the purple team.

However, since Kendra Ray, Holly Everman, Perri Johnson, Kellie Rock, Thia Tola, and Tracia Ward were the winning moderators of Dancing with the Stars 20 (Ray), So You Think You Can Dance 12 (Holly & Perri and Kellie), The Voice 8 (Tola), and American Idol 15 competitions, they were not required to participate. This resulted in an all-purple team for the first time in the web site's history as only Ava & Kymberly, Julia Passalt, and Lanise White participated.

Dancing with the Stars XXII[edit]

The cast was revealed on March 8, 2016 on Good Morning America.[21] Edyta Śliwińska returns as a professional dancer this season after an eleven-season hiatus.[22] Also returning to the pro roster are Artem Chigvintsev and Peta Murgatroyd, both of whom did not appear last season as professional dancers, as well as Sasha Farber, who is once again promoted from troupe member to pro dancer. Last season's champion Derek Hough is not returning for this season.[23] Also not returning are Allison Holker, Emma Slater, Anna Trebunskaya, and Louis van Amstel.

Actress Jodie Sweetin was the first celebrity revealed on Good Morning America on March 2, 2016, while TV meteorologist Ginger Zee was also revealed on GMA two days later, March 4.[24][25] The remaining celebrities and professionals dancers were later revealed on GMA on March 8.[21]

The site participated in the 22nd season of Dancing with the Stars as a built-in make-up competition.

Because of the withdraws of Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Tamar Braxton in the previous season, Zinn, Alvaraz, Passalt, White, and McClannahan have supported picks on the 22nd season of DWTS while the pink team moderators were unexpectedly given another season off as Kathi & Karly and Kathy Roberts did not participate.

Dancing with the Stars 22
  1. 1.0 1.1 Although Lanise White became the winning moderator on the 22nd season of DWTS, White accepted two of the three prizes (attending the 2016 Hall of Fame Game in Akron, Ohio and a cash prize of $250,000) White said,

  1. During week 3 of Dancing with the Stars 21, Lanise White's pick of Kim Zolciak-Biermann was able to rehearse, but her doctors refused to clear her for air travel after Zolciak-Biermann suffered a mini-stroke. As a result, Kim was unable to attend the dress rehearsal and the live show, which, according to rules of DWTS, meant Kim would have to withdraw from the competition. Had Zolciak-Biermann not withdrew from the competition, either Andy & Allison (chosen by Ava & Kymberly) or Paula & Louis would have been eliminated that night.[18] Kim's dance partner, Tony Dovolani, performed their routine during the live show with stand-in Jenna Johnson.[19] As a result of Zolciak-Biermann withdrawing from the competition, Lanise White was disqualified and her remaining pick of Hayes & Emma, moved to Team Julia.
  2. During week 9 of Dancing with the Stars 21, Tamar Braxton fell ill and was taken to the emergency room. Braxton was unable to return for her contemporary dance; the judges' scores were based on dress rehearsal footage. Braxton did return just in time for her team-up dance with Nick & Sharna. However, she subsequently withdrew from the competition after her doctors discovered pulmonary embolisms in her lungs.[20]As a result of Braxton withdrawing from the competition, Julia Passalt was disqualified and her remaining pick of Nick & Sharna, moved to Team Ava & Kymberly resulting in an automatic "Double VFTG Victory" since Zinn and Alvaraz were the only remaining moderators that had picks left in the competition.
