Early Life and career[edit]

Stephen Christian was born in Denver. His father, David Joesph Christian (1935 – 1993), was a florist. Her mother, Julie Christian (née Mengering, b. 1941 d. 2017), a news anchorwoman at KTRJ, KIAA, and KDEN, has been an occasional figure in Denver, usually at holidays and birthdays. His father is of German descent, and his mother had English, Scots-Irish, and German ancestry. Stephen is the youngest of five children with two older sisters, Laverne (b. 1963) and Kymberly (b. 1967 d. 2017), an older brother, Juan (b. 1965), and a younger sister Davina (formerly Dave Jr.) (b. 1969). Davina followed in Stephen's footsteps after his transition from female to male in 1994 and Davina transitioning from male to female in 1996.

He lived on the south side of Denver (Hampden South area), not far from Auroa, Colorado, and the Stapleton International Airport, and he enjoyed collecting model airplanes, including fighter jets. David Christian survived a heart attack at age 36, shortyly before Stephen was born. Like his older sister, Kymberly, the fear of losing his father was constantly with Stephen growing up.[1] David Christian died of a second heart attack at age 57.

Stephen Christian (as Shirley Christian) attended his hometown's Thomas Jefferson High School and worked as a waiter at a local McDonald's. [2]

Gender transition[edit]

In 1993 at 23 years of age, Stephen began undergoing a physical and social gender transition that began on December 1, 1994 (it is interesting to note the coincidence of the December 1 date of Stephen's female to male transition are respectively 10 and 20 years before current Vote for the Girls moderators Ava Zinn and Rachael Passalt themselves began their own transitions from male to female). He had a bilateral mastectomy with nipple grafts performed the beginning of October 1994 before beginning hormone therapy on December 1, 1994. In July 1994, a Colorado Court granted his request for a name change and he legally completed his transition in October 1996, when he had his gender officially changed on all of his legal documents including his birth certificate.

Stephen's gender transition spawned sister Davina's and niece Denise's transitions from male to female. Davina Christian began her own gender transition on March 4, 1996 (the date when KDNC switched from CBS to Fox and Davina's 27th birthday), and Denise Alvaraz (Kymberly's now youngest daughter and Stephen's niece), came out as trans in 2013 and began her transition on December 1, 2014 (the same day Rachael Passalt began her own transition and the tenth anniversary of Ava Zinn's own transition).
