"Quillsville Cold Case: The Final Teaching" is the second episode of the thirteenth season of the American animated television series Queen of the Willis. It originally aired in broadcast syndication in the United States on August 23, 2024 as a two-hour movie. In the episode, the 1994 case of a the sister of Emilie's teacher Dana Jane Zobrowski, Kate Zobrowski is re-opened when Lt.Nick Jeffries gets a call from a prisoner on death-row -- scheduled to be executed in just three days.

The episode was written by Thia Tola and directed by Season Atkins.

Plot[edit]

In 1994, Elinda Zobrowski and his daughters Kate and Dana are moving into a new home, and giving instructions to the moving crew. Elinda tells Kate and Dana Jane that some men and transwomen in the moving crew are ex-cons and that the company hired them to help them turn their lives around. That same night, Kate is found raped and murdered in the kitchen of their new house. Melanie Tibbs, one of the movers, is accused and convicted of her murder.

At the precinct, in the present day, Lt. Nick Jeffries receives a call from Melanie. Nick Jeffries was one of the officers who interviewed Melanie when she was arrested in 1994. She has always maintained that she didn’t rape or kill Kate, and she insists the cop who arrested her framed her. Now she pleads to Jeffries to re-open the case.

According to Melanie’s story, she went back to the house to deliver an apology letter to Ms. Zobrwski and found Kate already dead. When she heard a noise, she ran, afraid people were going to think she killed her because she had earlier convictions. She says the officer who arrested her took the letter from Melanie’s pocket and took it with him.

Sgt. Lilly Rush finds out that the officer in question, retired QPD officer Joe Noland (who retired in 2000 after 28 years), has just died from stage four prostate cancer after the police’s internal affairs bureau investigated him for corruption in 1999. Jeffries and Captain Brad Hunter go talk to Melanie in the death row; she is scheduled to be executed in three days.

Melanie flashes back to the afternoon she was in the Zobrowski’s house. She was carrying a heavy mirror upstairs and Ms. Zobrowski offered to help. Melanie didn’t want to look bad in front of her boss so she refused, but she fumbled and dropped the mirror. It upset Ms. Zobrowski, they had a heated argument, and Melanie ended up being fired.

Lilly and Officer Jarrett Dailey talk to Ms. Zobrowski and her daughter Dana Jane about their testimony. They ask Ms. Zobrowski whether she really saw Melanie at the house that night or if Officer Noland made her say that. Ms. Zobrowski relives the moments where Officer Noland told her he found Melanie a few blocks from Ms. Zobrowski’s house, with blood on her boots, and how the officer kept saying that Melanie was guilty. Officer Noland asked her over and over again if Ms. Zobrowski or Dana Jane saw Melanie inside the house that night, until Elinda relented and said that she really did see her. Elinda admits that she never saw anyone at the house that night.

Captain Hunter and Lt. Jeffries go ask the DA who prosecuted the case for a warrant for the letter that Officer Noland supposedly took from Melissa, since all of Noland’s possessions are with the IAB under investigation. The DA refuses, saying there is no question about Melissa’s guilt.

Meanwhile, Officer Dailey and Lilly talk to Caroline Nelson, Melanie’s boss at the time who was then known as Kyle before her sex change in 2015. Caroline flashes back to that afternoon when they were moving the Zobrowski’s stuff from the van. Ms. Zobrowski had given Caroline her car keys and some money to buy lunch for the crew, but Caroline gave them to Melanie because she wanted to keep an eye on the rest of her employees. On the way to the car, Melanie passed by Kate and her friend, studying on the lawn. Kate’s friend, identified as Barbara at the time, flirted with her and went with Melanie to get lunch.

Now barbara is being interviewed. Barbara tells Officers Ramona Battishill and Elaine Reed that she tried to seduce Melanie, but she didn’t go for it. She flashes back and describes how Kate and Melanie talked about her drinking problem and Kate’s mother’s drinking problem. Barbara says she got Melanie’s phone number from his pager and dared Kate to call her. Kate finally called Melanie that night and, according to Barbara, she called right back. Lt. Jeffries confronts Melanie about the call and she swears she never made any call. Elinda Zobrowski comes to the police station before the execution and reveals she heard the phone ring and Kate talk to someone on the phone. She says she never told the police about it because she didn’t want anybody saying that Kate or Dana Jane brought it on herself.

Lt. Jeffries talks to Melanie just before the execution, and asks her to tell the truth before she dies. Melanie maintains she is innocent. She is ready to receive the lethal injection when she flashes back one last time.

It is dark and she is holding a letter. She gets to the Zobrowski’s front door and realizes it is open; she enters the house and hears noises in the kitchen. When she gets there, Kate is on the floor bleeding. She dies right in front of her. Melanie’s last words to Jeffries are "prove me innocent". The next day, even without a warrant, Lt. Jeffries goes to the evidence storage and finds Melanie’s letter in Officer Noland’s belongings. He finally realizes Melanie was telling the truth all along.

They also find out Caroline, Melanie’s boss, has been lying about her relationship with her own daughter, Cassadee. They track her down and question her about her father. She says she ran away after graduating from school because her father sexually abused her since she was thirteen years old. She recalls that she called her friends many times a day trying to find her after she left. One day, she simply stopped calling and she never heard from her again. When asked if she remembers when that was, Faith answers it was June '94. Lilly realizes it was the same month that Kate died.

The phone records show that it was Caroline who called Kate that night, pretending to be Melanie. Sgt. Rush and Lt. Jeffries confront Caroline about the call and she lies, saying she called thinking it was Melanie, but she told her it wasn’t. When the officers say they know about Faith, Caroline breaks down and starts remembering Kate’s last night. Kate opened the door, thinking Melanie was coming to talk to her but it was Caroline at the door. She got inside the house and followed Kate to the kitchen, calling her Faith. When Kate tried to escape from Caroline, she grabbed a knife and assaulted her.

In the present, Lt. Jeffries arrests Caroline and Lilly thanks both Faith Nelson. The song Don't Turn Around by Ace of Base starts playing while Lt. Jeffries is reprimanded for punching DA Pia Yoque. Lilly and Dana Jane sees Kate in the cold case vault, and DA Yoque packs her things from her office. The Willis family (Ava, Angie, Mandy, Brittany, Rhonda, Suzanne, Emilie, Hillary, Luanne, Brynn Tabby, Shushu, Heather), Dylan Porter, Heidi Unger, Christiana Sellars, Breeanna Sellars, Sierra Hicks (formerly Stan Hicks), Dominique Hicks, Melissa Rose, Stephanie Rose, Kaity Kendall, Kendra Kendall, Miles Kendall, Allison Kendall, Jackie Kendall, Avril Lavigne, Alisan Porter, Karly Jameson, Lt. Jeffries, Captain Hunter, Mayor Pence, Marla Pence, Pamhouser, and Elinda Zobrowski attend Melanie’s funeral, where Lt. Jeffries catches a glimpse of Melanie.
