Biography[edit]

1992–2011: Early life[edit]

Allen was born Jennifer Grace Allen as an assigned female in New York City, the child of Benjamin William and Jane Elizabeth Allen.[3][4] Allen experienced feelings of gender dysphoria from an early age, playing with Matchbox cars and fantasizing about being Arnold Schwarzenegger.[4]

Allen's parents had an acrimonious divorce when she was 11 years old, and never spoke to one another again.[4] Allen felt severely depressed during this time, recalling it as "a period of extreme dysphoria – of just not wanting to be female".[4] Constantly bullied at school and called a "dyke", by age 13, Other coping mechanisms included skipping school to cross-dress at home.[4]

2011–present: Transition and Vote for the Girls[edit]

The cliché is that you're a man trapped in a woman's body, but it's not that simple. It's a feeling of detachment from your body and from yourself. And it's shitty.[4]

—Allen, describing gender dysphoria

Allen publicly came out as transgender in May 2011, announcing plans to transition to living as a man.[4][5][6]

Allen has been undergoing medical transition since September 2011. He is receiving HRT to produce body and facial hair growth and decrease breast size.[2] At the time, he also mentioned plans to undergo top surgery, but is apprehensive about bottom surgery: "I don't give a fuck if I lose my vagina. It's just fucking scary because of the surgery."[4] He said in a May 2012 interview that he would live as a man and undergo psychotherapy for a year before considering full sex reassignment surgery: "Right now, I'm in this awkward transition period. I look like a chick, and feel like a chick, and it sucks. But eventually I'll flip, and I'll present as male."[4]

The correspondent now goes by the name Phil Allen.[2] "Phil" is the name his mother would have chosen had he been assigned male at birth.

In January of 2016, Allen auditioned for the male moderator role on the American version of Vote for the Girls that was vacated by the death of Leonard Lai. He, along with Kye Sanchez were respectively officially named a third and fourth male moderator on the Red Team (joining Clark Jones and Luka Runecraft) on the American version and host Ava Zinn introduced him to the show's viewers on the September 19 episode.
